Independent Children’s Bookstores on the Westside of Los Angeles

We tuck our kids in at night with a kiss, a stuffed animal, and a few dozen books. We drag them to the Festival of Books every April, although what they really enjoy is stalking the poor soul in the Clifford suit. Chalk it up to nature, nurture, or neuroticism, but we are now blessed with children who love books. Here’s our review of the kid-appeal of independent bookstores on Los Angeles’ Westside.

Children’s Book World

This giant bookstore devoted solely to children’s literature occupies three rooms, its shelves bursting with books on subjects dear to any hip mom’s heart, such as yoga, multicultural folk tales, gardening, and how to get your kids into the best private schools. One room is devoted to middle grade and young adult books, but there is still plenty of space for picture books, multi-media, board books, and a comprehensive non-fiction section. CBW carries many unique tomes not seen in mainstream bookstores. The ability to browse new titles and view illustrations is a definite benefit over ordering online. www.childrensbookworld.com

Diesel

Located in the Brentwood Country Mart, Diesel has a small children’s book section. The bookstore does not occupy many square feet, which allows us to keep an easy eye on the munchkins while we survey the interesting selections set out for adults. Diesel does manage to squash quite a few books into its limited space. www.dieselbookstore.com

Hi De Ho Comics and Books with Pictures

It may seem like a hangout for teenagers, but Hi De Ho also has some fun things for kids. My son goes crazy for the comic book hero T-shirts, which are way less expensive than those in mainstream stores. Some of the comic books are aimed at a younger audience, such as Disney, the Simpsons and Batman the Brave and the Bold. They also have a few toys, oh, excuse me, “collectible figurines.” hidehocomics.com

Small World Books

SWB has a small children’s section, so keep it in mind the next time you visit the Venice boardwalk. www.smallworldbooks.com

Unfortunately, Every Picture Tells a Story in Santa Monica is closing. The store used to feature artwork along with books. It also sponsored many author and illustrator signings. We are sad to see it go.
