In February of 2010, the Stern home was the scene of a drive-by shooting. Yvonne Stern was not at home. In April of 2010, someone rang the bell at the home; Yvonne Stern went to answer the door and the man outside the door, opened fire. He missed, neither Yvonne Stern nor any other family members were injured. Stern and her family moved into an apartment after the April incident, for safety reasons, but she was tracked down there also. In May of 2010, as she sit in her car, in the apartment parking lot, a man approached the car, with a gun leveled at her head. Stern began to beg and plead, telling the gunman about her children and a new grandchild. The gunman lowered the gun and shot Stern in the stomach, she pretended to be dead. After the gunman fled, Stern drove herself to a service station for help.

Her husband noted Houston attorney, Jeffrey Stern and his girlfriend Michelle Cabrera Gaiser, are two of six people arrested and charged in the plot. Gaiser has admitted her role in the plot. Nhut Nguyen has been tried and convicted of attempted murder for his role. He was charged in the attempt at the Stern home. Nguyen’s gun jammed and left him unable to shoot at Stern again. In August, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. November 1, Damian Flores went to trial for the attempt on Sterns life in the apartment parking lot. Tattoo artist James Lowery and a fifth person, Richard Gutierrez, have also been charged with solicitation of capital murder.

Following the allegations, Stern filed for divorce, citing adultery. She had a change of heart and is now reconciled with her husband. She accompanied him to the police station to turn himself in. She held his hand hugged him. Her attorney told ABC news earlier this year; “She is without a doubt convinced that he got involved with a woman who, for whatever reasons, through whatever grandeur delusions, psychosis, whatever it may be, believed that she needed to get rid of Mrs. Stern. And that is where the prosecutor and Mrs. Stern differ. … She doesn’t believe he had anything to do with planning the attempts on her life,”
