How to Write, Format, and Publish an EBook, like the ‘The Skyscraper of Babel’

What are eBooks and Why Do We Read eBooks?

eBooks are becoming very popular in today’s world, and there’s many reasons why – eBooks are much cheaper than print books, can be bought immediately from an electronic device like Amazon’s Kindle or the iPad, and offer a reading experience on the go. Though reading eBooks on the computer or a handheld device can be a lot of fun and a great way to read, it may also be an idea of yours to learn how to write your own eBook. Though learning how to write a successful eBook that will be published and hopefully sell many copies is not easy, it is possible.

How to Start to Write Your eBook

The most important part of writing an eBook may also be the most simple – you have to write it first. When thinking about how to write an eBook, it’s always a good idea to of course write about something that you’re experienced in or passionate about. At the same time, it’s also always smart to write about a topic or story that is interesting to people, marketable, and of course publishable.

Writing any novel or information work like an eBook takes a lot of time, energy, and dedication. Whether it’s weeks, months, or years, make sure you fit the time in to get your eBook written and ready to go on your own schedule. You have something special to say to the world, and let your motivation to write an eBook knowing the satisfaction you will get when people from around the world have the chance to read it on online eBook sites.

How to Edit Your eBook

Once you write your eBook, it’s time to edit it. Whether you’re writing your eBook on how to make money as a writer to creating a YA fiction teen fantasy or science fiction novel, like any book to be published it needs to be well written, error free, and a good read overall. If you don’t feel like you have the time or skill to edit your book well, there are many reputable editors online who can edit your book for you or give you tips on better writing for improvement. Joining an online writer’s community or blog is another great way to improve your eBook and learn how to make and publish an eBook in the first place.

How to Format Your eBook

After you edit your eBook, you’re on your way to learning how to format it. Formatting for an eBook is much different than formatting a paper in Microsoft word. For example, there are no tabs used ever, amid many other difficult and surprising rules. While there are ways for experienced eBook publishers and writers to format their own work, it is sometimes the best idea to hire someone – they can be found at an affordable price if you know where to look online – to format your eBook for you. Both editing and formatting are important parts of finding out how to make and publish an eBook, but these can be parts where others can help you at a small cost.

How to Self Publish and Market Your eBook

Lastly, you just need to publish and market. Find an eBook self publisher, such as Lulu, Smashwords, or Amazon’s CreateSpace, and publish your eBook. Once it’s out where everyone can buy it, it’s then important to market your published eBook – you won’t get paid and won’t get read if no one can find your work in the first place! Try some marketing skills such as posting to your Facebook, sharing on Twitter, and updating local community blog sites or Linkedin to spread the word about you publishing your first eBook. Take pride – you’re an officially published author now! It’s time to start on the next one!

My Own Experience and Teen novel eBook, The Skyscraper of Babel

I myself recently published my first YA fiction, teen fantasy and science fiction novel, The Skyscraper of Babel, as an eBook. Self publishing has been a great chance for me so far to get my eBook novel out there and find some readers. Once you build an established readership for yourself, such as on Amazon’s Kindle and the iBookstore, you can start making money and getting yourself known as an eBook author. Along with your eBook, you’ll need a summary and idea of your novel or book to entice readers. Here is an example from my teen eBook, The Skyscraper of Babel:

When Aidan Shields, a junior who’s resigned himself to a humdrum high school life, and his friends are suddenly killed in a car accident, they awake to find themselves in the mysterious Skyscraper of Babel. The group and their guardian angels discover that the world after this one may be a bit more than they bargained for – and that adventure can be found in the most unexpected of places.

With these steps, you too can start learning how to write, make, edit, format, publish, and last but not least market your eBook. Watch as you become a successful author by starting in on the world of online book reading in eBooks! Make the transition for your book or novel today!
