Homemade Mardi Gras jewelry is fun to make with items you have around the house, especially if you love beads. Current necklaces, bracelets and headbands transform easily into festive Mardi Gras accessories.

Create a Mardi Gras necklace from any necklace chain you have. Simply remove the pendant from the chain then string purple, green and/or gold beads on the chain. The size of the bead will depend on the diameter of the chain. If you do not have the proper size bead in your bead collection, make homemade beads from salt dough. Use multiple lengths of chain to create a layered bead look.

Salt dough is made by mixing an equal amount of salt and flour in a bowl. Add water slowly and stir. The consistency of the mixture will be that of Play-Doh when finished. Roll the beads to the desired size. Poke a hole through the center of the bead with a toothpick. Bake the bead for 30 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Paint the beads the desired color after they have cooled completely.

Hoop earrings are another jewelry item that easily turns into Mardi Gras bling. Slide blue, gold and green beads over the hoop end. Add dangles by sliding cut pieces of blue, green or gold tinsel on the hoops. Cut the tinsel into pieces from one to three inches long. Poke a hole in one end with a needle. Position the hole approximately 1/8-inch from an end. Alternate the tinsel between the beads for a unique look.

Wrap a headband or bracelet with purple, green and/or gold satin ribbon. Insert feathers into the ribbon overlaps for added dimension.

Take a plastic bangle bracelet and roll it in white glue. Sprinkle the bracelet with glitter. Tap off the excess glitter then place the bracelet in a safe location to dry. The glue will peal off after the celebration and look good as new. This also allows you to use the bracelet again and turn it a different color.

Look at other pieces of jewelry in your jewelry box or visit a local thrift store to purchase items that are easily transformed into the perfect Mardi Gras accessory.
