Hidden Dangers for Your Dog at Public Parks

If you are a dog owner, it’s almost guaranteed you will spend time in local parks. Public parks are usually filled with other dogs and people which are not only a distraction for your dog, but can also pose some hidden dangers. Below are some of the possible hidden dangers that you and your dog could face in public parks.

Fishermen and their equipment:

Fishermen pose two unique challenges when it comes to your dog. If your dog loves being in the water, it can pose a problem for fisherman fishing on the lake. If your dog is splashing around in the water near someone’s fishing spot, it can ruin the fishing for the day and that will anger the fisherman. He/she may not say anything, but there is always a chance that someone can cause trouble for you and your dog, so it’s best to keep your dog well away from waters that are being fished.

Another possible danger fishermen pose to your dog stems from their fishing tackle. Not all fishermen are responsible, some do not properly dispose of their old fishing tackle. If your dog steps on or swallows an old rusty fish hook it could lead to expensive medical bills to have it removed. The fishing line itself could be dangerous if your dog swallows it. You have to be vigilant to ensure your dog doesn’t eat or step-on anything that could hurt him/her.

Other dogs:

As much as your dog may like to socialize, it’s important to remember that you can’t really tell a dog’s temperament from afar. Even the most calm dog can snap when they feel threatened, which could lead to them attacking your dog. The best thing you can do is keep your dog leashed if there are other dogs near by. Also, when your dog is leashed pay attention to your surroundings, don’t walk your dog too close to another dog. Even if you have to go out of your way to avoid an oncoming dog, you should.

Vehicles:

Most people don’t think about the risk vehicles can pose to their dog at parks, but the danger is there. Any time dogs and vehicles are in close quarters, the risk to the dogs goes up. Parks are especially dangerous because people are out to have a good time and aren’t always on the look out for animals in the road. The best way to protect your dog from vehicles is to keep them on a leash, unless they are in an enclosed area.

To protect your dog from hidden park dangers you must thing two steps ahead of your dog. Scan the area for potential problems. If something looks like it could be a problem avoid that area. While an outing to the park is supposed to be fun, you have to be ready to take quick action to protect your dog.
