Five Bible Verses for a Deeper Heaven-focused Faith and Life

Five of the most inspirational Bible verses I know come from the New Testament books of Matthew, John and 1st and 2nd Timothy. Each selection of scriptural verses inspired by calling me to focus more on heavenly matters and less on earthly matters. Clearly, there are plenty more inspirational verses I could have chosen. These are simply five examples from a book full of inspirational verses for Christians worldwide.

1. Matthew 6:25-34 Anytime I begin to worry, I turn to this scripture. When I was unemployed for more than six months, these were the verses that kept me from sinking into depression. “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” The answer is no. Even as I continued looking for a job to feed my wife and children, I gained strength from these verses. I needed to seek God, His kingdom, His righteousness first. As long as I did that, God would take care of the rest. It was a faith-building time. After 11 months, I found a full-time job.

2. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 In my teen years, I began asking a lot of questions about God and the Bible. This scripture helped me erase any doubts about how God speaks to us, and about the Bible’s authority. “All Scripture” is from God. Is the Bible made up of words simply to read and ponder? These verses clearly helped me see that the Bible was meant for more. We are supposed to use scripture to train ourselves in righteousness. Also, here we see that scripture is useful to teach, rebuke and correct others.

3. 1 Timothy 4:16 After my sometimes wild college days, I discovered this scripture. It helped me realize that not only did I need to know what was right doctrinally, but I needed to actually live my life by what was right. I’m the oldest. I have two younger siblings. Once I understood these verses, I couldn’t with a clear conscience say to my siblings (or anyone else for that matter), “Do as I say, not as I do.”

4. John 13:34-35 This is a scripture that forced me to love. My wife is glad I try to keep these verses close to my heart. For those who profess to be Christians love is a command. We are told to consciously “love one another.” In all honesty, this is one of the toughest scriptures to live by. We are called to love each other as God loves us. No excuses or wiggle room with this scripture.

5. Matthew 28:18:20 This scripture changed my life. It is often referred to as the Great Commission. Here Jesus tells his disciples to go out and “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” I realized this scripture was telling me that it was my personal responsibility to teach people about Jesus. Teach them “to obey everything I have commanded you,” Jesus said.

Taken together, these five scriptures can inspire a person to another level of life, another level of faith. Reading these verses, understanding them, living them has made all the difference for me.
