Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, in London, England, Adele released her first album, 19, in 2008, when she was 19 years old. It was immediately successful, topping the British charts, and gathering four Grammy award nominations.

Her voice has been described as husky, yet gentle. She cites Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Roberta Flack as influences on her singing style.

As a child she had listened to acts that were popular among her peer group: Destiny’s Child, Backstreet Boys, and Spice Girls, among others. Then one day she was browsing amongst some CDs, and found an Etta James recording. She liked the picture of the hairstyle on the front, and bought it so that she could show it to her hairdresser. But then, she listened to the CD. “When I heard the song ‘Fool That I Am,’ everything changed for me,” she told an interviewer. “I never wanted to be a singer until I heard that.”

She has bucked the trend of skinny performers. She has noted on her website, “I love food and hate exercise.” She has also remarked, “I don’t want to be on the cover of Playboy or Vogue. I want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone or Q. I’m not a trend-setter … I’m a singer. I never want to be known for anything else. I’d rather weigh a ton and make an amazing album….”

In 2009, Adele won two Grammy awards, one for best new artist. She has become increasingly popular in the United States, but was sidelined in June of 2011 with a vocal injury.

While fans wait, they have her recordings to savor.
