- What were the advantages for Pepsi Co. to create a new entity in yum brands? Why couldn't it be one large co.?
- Q: I was reading about the history and Pepsi created a spin off for KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. I just wanted to know why they did that. Wuldn't there be more revenue brought into Pepsi Co. if they kept the chains under Yum Brands?
- A: The reasoning for the spin-off was the returns of the restaurants were actually dragging Pepsi's fast growing beverage and snack businesses down (less growth options). For example, if your return on yum brands (restaurant segment) is 7%, but your other two business groups are 12-18% and you want to invest in those areas you need to find a way to gain cash and jettison lower return segments. What this means is that Pepsi can't spend money on all their segments and grow per the expectations of the market/shareholders expect it to. So spin off a slower growth business and let it fend for itself. Once it is up and running solo it can reinvest in itself easily. This allowed pepsi to concentrate on its core segments to grow faster and invest in better growth business segments..
