- Q:
- A: You first have to WANT to quit. I am on day 10 being smoke free. I have been taking Chantix by Pfizer for about 3 weeks. It works to block the high that you get from nicotine but adds NO nicotine to your system. My husband and I decided to do it together and it is working so far. Don't get me wrong, we still get a urge to smoke but it passes really fast. Most health insurances pay for this prescription. They say it is 80% effective.
- Have you been able to quit smoking successfuly, how? Thanks!?
- Q: I've been smoking about 30 cigs a day now for about 30 years. I've quit before for short periods, up to 6 months once. I need all the help I can get!
- A: Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit. We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette. When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
- Once an individual quits smoking...how long on average does it take for symptoms of addiction to cease?
- Q: Can anything be done to improve lung health? What are some tips that can lead to successfuly quitting?
- A: Time will heal the lungs and to be honest I had patients who asked me the same question that had quit years ago and the need for a cigarette is always there I think, but the will to say no lies within you. I tell everyone that asks me how to quit, to just stop but before you can be successful you have to want to quit, you need the will and a reason to give it up. There is nothing that you can buy or any medicine that will help you more than your own will power. And don't keep a pack "just in case" thats too much temptation. Good Luck!
