Q: I just found out that Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 and 35,” with its well-known refrain “…Everybody must get stoned,” has the numbers it has in its title that it does because 12 times 35 equals 420 — which it does. (Therefore, stoned people CAN do math. Q.E.D.) This means that the “420” shorthand has to predate 1966, since that is when Dylan released that song. So it’s over 40 years old — who knew? How old is this “code,” and where does it come from?
