How are morphine, heroin and codeine different since they all come from the same plant? ?
Q: My husband takes codeine for his back so is that the same as taking heroin or morphine? How is codeine different then heroin or morphine?
A: Okay, yes codein, heroin, and morphene, are all opiates and they all come from the poppy plant. So they are all similar, but they all have a different molecular makeup. Codeine is a weak opiate, altough dont mistake that for thinking it is not still harmful, It is still very addictive, and still has the potential for abuse. I would say Vicodan is the weakest opiate, and then codein would come next. Morphene is probably one of the strongest prescribed opiates, right up there with oxycontin. Heroin is illigal, and is extremely strong, and very addictive. All opiates are addictive ecause even if you take them the way they are prescribed, if they are taken for a long period of time then you would have to detox from them when you stop taking them, but codein is alot less potent than morphene and heroin are. If your husband is taking these for his back, then he is taking them for the right reasons . There are people out there who do abuse codein, and that is when it becomes the same as morphene and heroine, because it is being used for the purpose to get high. But when it is prescribed to someone and they follow the doctors orders then it is nothing like taking heroin. So please do not worry, but just keep an eye on him, and make sure he is taking the prescribed dose, and that if for some reason he ever has to stop taking them he talks to his doctor about it first, because it could be a litttle unconfortable for him.
Where does this come from??
Q: Alright, I was watching a TV show last night and they were showing how pills are made. My question is, where do the chemicals that make the drug come from? Street drugs are easy. Cocaine comes from the coca plant, heroin from the opium poppy. Some prescriptions are easy also. Penicillian comes from mold. But, where do these new drugs come from? Like the cancer drugs or AIDS drugs or any of the blood pressure or cholesterol drugs? Are there just millions of chemicals out there and if you mix different combos they do different stuff? Or do most come from plants? If anybody has any links or any insight, please share. And please, no stupid answers.Diane, I know that, but where do the original chemicals come from. Say I have drug A. It’s ingredients are chemical B, C and D. What i want to know is, where do B,C and D come from.
A: drugs can come from man made materials or can come from plants. Most successful drugs are derived from plants. It is a huge trial and error process.

A: Here’s a good example : Taxol, a relatively new and heavily used chemotherapy drug for cancers, came from the bark of the Pacific yew tree before it could be biosynthesized. Also, Vinca alkaloids use for cancer and leukemia are from plants. Quinine came from bark. Digitalis was from the leaf of a plant – found in the late 1700s.Many medical compounds are found in nature just like the drugs you mentioned. Often these are later synthesized.Cis-platinum used as chemotherapy for many cancers is simply a chemical form of the metal platinum accidentally found in labs to interfere with cellular reproduction.Thousands of compounds are tested and fiddled with (there’s a professional term) to find active agents for diseases. Most compounds wind up as dead end wasted time and money. We often bash drug companies for their profits, but the profit motive keeps them spending money searching for newer, safer, more effective drugs. [No, I have never worked for a drug company – – just trying to be fair to them.]
