A: MDMA (or E) is actually a difficult drug for drug dogs to detect, but the volatiles that may remain after manufacture are not difficult. By training a dog to alert to specific volatiles at low levels your also picking up possible explosive manufacturing residues as well. Drug smells are not in the natural prey drive ‘sensory’ zones a dogs nose is adapted to. Because they are trained by reward ‘rote’ learning… they really cannot tell if someone only sat somewhere where someone rolled a joint weeks before or your carrying… volatiles likewise. Dogs are more about prevention by visibility. LSD however can be produced very pure and with near zero signature most dog detections will be for ‘other’ drugs associated with it. ie: residual cannabis odor from handling the packaging or proximity, ie clothing unrelated to the LSD itself. Customs canines are effective in being intimidatory (handlers see signs of fear and thus give sometimes unintended cues to dog to alert).
