Can you give me an example of two different passwords that produce the same LM hash?
Q: The LM hash is the encryption system that windows uses to store user passwords. a LM hash can only hold 7 characters and is 16 characters long itself, so there must be multiple collisions.
A: As I understand things, the hash can hold 14 characters (bytes) but is split into two 7 character halves. A password is case sensitive. Assume a totally random selection of either 26 lower case letters, 26 upper case letters, and 10 digits (0-9) to choose from. (Note: This excludes all other special ascii characters.)The formula for determining total possibilities is (number of valid characters)^(length of password). Even if both 7 character halves are identical, and if only upper case letters and the digits 0-9 are used, that’s 36 possible characters raised to the 7th power. Doing the math, 36^7 = >78 billion possible combinations. If the second 7 character half also has >78 billion possibilities, the chance of a collision is possible between two or more users on the same computer, but infinitesimally small. And that’s not including the possibility of using all the special ascii characters like ! @ # $ etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM_hashhttp://www.asciitable.com/wwbgd
