How come people who are exposed to second hand smoke, dont become addicted to cigarettes? See details?
Q: Ok, as a kid, my parents both smoked about a pack a day IN THE HOUSE. Gross and inconsiderate, I know. I got to thinking, I was exposed to TONS of both filtered and unfiltered smoke, and yet, I have NEVER ever smoked a cigarette. Why didnt I get addicted to cigarette smoke? I was exposed to the filtered stuff they blew out AND the unfiltered smoke from the buring cigarette? If cigarettes are so addictive, why arent i hooked on them?By the way, I am no longer around smokers at all. I’m a married mom, and we dont smoke and few of our friends smoke, and never around us. So I know I dont crave the smoke, cuz I’ve been fine without it for years. If I do get a whiff, my mind associates the smell with my childhood, nothing moreIs it possible that not just the chemicals in cigarettes are addictive, but also the ACT of smoking?
A: You are smarter than they are & were! YOU Knew better than to smoke. You didn’t inhale the worst part the NICOTINE. That is what gets people hooked on smoking.
What percent of people who smoke cigarettes become addicted?
Q: I’ve bummed alot cigs off other people but i have never felt like i NEEDED one, and i won’t waste my money on them so i don’t think I’m addicted, i just wanna know if there is a percent of people who don’t become addicted and what that % is.
A: I don’t know what the percentage is, because despite what someone said here regular smoking is *not* the same as addiction — there are people who smoke regularly and have no withdrawal symptoms if they stop. However, I did see recently a figure for “social smokers” — those who don’t smoke every day — and it was 19%, so I’d say you’re in good company. The actual percentage of people who don’t become addicted to tobacco even if they smoke may be higher, since they’re more apt to stop than those who are addicted and not be counted as smokers.
is it possible to smoke cigarettes and not get addicted?
Q: I smoke every once in a while when my friends and i go to a bar but i’ve never had the inclination of buying a pack.
A: Some people have what is called addictive personalities… they get addicted to about anything they try… dope, drugs, alcohol, porn, gambling, etc. And of all substances, many who have been addicted to heroin have said that the heroin was easier to drop than the cigarettes. We know that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances around… not as bad as meth, which is an instant neuron chance, but darn near. Watch the recent movie about Edward R. Morrow.. something like “Good night, and good luck”, and it talks in there about Senate hearings in the 50’s and cigarette advertising. By the early 60’s a clear connections had been made between tobacco and lung cancer… by the 60’s there had been smokers now in the US since the end of WWI, and the odds of getting it and being a smoker were huge (WWI soldiers came back from France smoking cigarettes. The fad spread quickly). And by the late 50, cigarette companies were being sued.Since now we all know that it will cause cancer of the lung, why would anyone continue to smoke it they knew the chances of cancer were high? Simple. It’s an addiction. At a cigarette or two you don’t really smoke enough to have it become part of your life style. but…. this is the way it starts.
