I have high blood pressure; what is a good NATURAL remedy for a nasal decongestant?
Q: Most OTC decongestants are not recommended for people with hypertension, so my options are limited. Have tried Coricidin HB, but “knocks me out”! 🙂
A: 1.Humidity is the key to keeping the cilia working, the mucus flowing, and the sinuses drained.Twice a day, stand in a shower hot enough to fog up the mirror. Or lean over a pan full of steaming water with a towel draped over your head, creating a steam tent. Inhale the vapors as they waft up toward your nostrils.2.To flush out stale nasal secretions, use a commercial saline product or mixing 1 teaspoon of sea salt with 2 cups of warm water and a pinch of baking soda. Pour it into a shot glass, tilt your head back, close one nostril with your thumb, and sniff the solution with the open nostril. Then blow your nose gently. Repeat on the other side.3.Drinking extra liquids—both hot and cold—throughout the day, thins out the mucus and keeps it flowing. Sipping hot teas made with herbs such as fenugreek, fennel, anise, or sage may help move mucus even more.4.Apply a warm washcloth over your eyes and cheekbones and leave it there until you feel the pain subside. It may take only a few minutes.
Nasal decongestant for one year old?
Q: My son is sick and very congested, he can’t even eat or drink because then he can’t breathe. We have the humidifier on and I put some vicks baby rub on his chest, but none of these things works. Is there any nasal decongestant for babies? We went to the doctor yesterday because of his high fever, but he wasn’t congested until today, so I didn’t ask the doctor.
A: Well, here’s the thing. Everyone is going to tell you that there is no safe cold medicine (examples Benadryl, Dimetapp, etc.) for any child under the age of 2. That being said-We’ve had 2 doctors tell us that giving my son (he’s almost 14 months & this was when he was about 9 months) 3/4 tbs(that’s 3 quarters of a tablespoon!) was fine to help him breathe & sleep. The thing is, be sure to only give it to him at night. Of course, please check with your doctor before administering anything from what you hear on a message board. Like I said, my son was fine from it, but you must be VERY careful not to overdose or mix with any other meds (other than infant Tylenol or Infant Motrin). Good Luck & I hope he feels better soon! Also, you may want to try inclining his crip by placing some large books underneath the mattress or even under the crib feet.1 more thing-use the nasal aspirator they gave you at the hospital (or buy a new one) after you put some saline drops in. It’s still the best way to clear him out. (Although I’m sure he’ll scream through the whole thing like all babies do. 🙁 )
Are there any nasal sprays for people with high blood pressure?
Q: I’m looking for a nasal spray that does not contain a traiditional decongestant. Do you know of any natural solutions for nasal congestion that won’t raise blood pressure? Thanks.
A: My husband has high blood pressure and have given him Nasonex. I’v never checked the ingrediants, just assumed it was o.k. if doc gave it to him.
