How to I make my Scared Dog feel comfortable?
Q: Got a previous abused dog from a shelter. She’s scared 75% of the time. Hides under the bed most of the time as well. What should i do to make her feel comfortable and happy?
A: Speak to her kindly with a very gentle voice, never shout or raise your voice. Buy her a few dog toys, bones, and treats too. When she is under the bed, put some dog food in your hand and offer it to her and encourage her with a warm, gentle voice. If she is still under the bed, put the food on the floor and keep on encouraging her, if nothing is working just walk away. Play with her, pet her, love on her as much as you can. Take her for short enjoyable walks in a quiet area that doesn’t have a lot of cars or people and is away from the road.It takes time to build a relationship with a new pet, especially one that has been abused. Lots of love and care and encouragement will help.

How do you build up suspense in a novel and make the readers feel that the character is scared to death?
Q: Briefly; I want the reader to feel just as scared as the character, but i need some advice on how good writers manage to do it! (If your able – give examples!) THANKS!
A: First, you need to make sure your reader is attached to the character in danger. If we don’t care about them, why would we care if they live or die? There needs to be something endearing about them, something everyone can relate to. The more we can relate to your character in some way, or the more attached we are to them, the more scared we will feel if that character is in danger.Foreshadowing is a really awesome technique. Think about the time line of your suspense. Do you want it to have little hints and then just explode out of nowhere? Or do you want it to gradually build up to a climax? Or something else? Think of what works best for your plot. The following are a little more cliche, yet effective:Use scary language. Make it really sensory, so we feel like we’re there. ‘A chill trickled down my spine in the deafening silence’ as opposed to ‘I heard a horrible scream’ or ‘I felt scared.’Putting. A. Period. After. Every. Word. Can. Indicate. Urgency. If used correctly. Careful not to overuse this one.For examples, I would definitely check out ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’ ‘The Raven’ or ‘The Bells’ by Edgar Allen Poe. Or anything by Poe for that matter. 🙂
