My cat has blood in her urine, what do I do??
Q: We have been to two different vets, the first said that it was a urinary tract infection and we tried THREE different antibiotics which worked for a little while then started making her vomit. The next vet told us to change her diet and buy an extra litter box and water dish and that worked for a while and then stopped. She makes frequent trips to the litter box and is only successful some of the time. We did find out the last time that she has crystals in her urine. I am wondering if she may have a rare disease because she is unresponsive to treatment. Have any of you gone through something similar? I hate to see her suffer!
A: Ignore the rude people on this site. I would take her back to the vet and say you’re at a loss. It sounds like they need to do more work on her. She may have (god forbid) a tumor in her, and it can cause bleeding. Yes, this can happen. Make sure they feel for tumors, and do any x-rays or other tests. Lets hope it is just a case of stubborn urinary tract infection. If it is just that, and they put her on antibiotics again, try adding a tsp full of vinegar to her water. Vinegar helps clean out a cats urinary tract.
1 yr old cat with blood in urine – not a UTI or bladder infection – as per the vet?
Q: Hi Everyone,I was looking for some insight. I noticed blood in my cats urine and noticing she was going into the box alomost hourly but not peeing much at all so I figured I would bring her in to the vets (where I also got her at my local town animal hospital). They did a urinalysis and a sensitivity culture. One confirmed the blood in the urine. The same day I brought her I picked her up and they sent me home w/amoxicillin in a liquid to give her ever 12 hours. That was on a monday. I had been feeding her wet and dry food and treats every so often prior to this. Everyone thought it may be a UTI or bladder infect. When the 2nd test results came back it confirmed “no infection”..so he said that it could be stones, polyps or crystals and if it happens again to bring her back for xrays and/or ultrasound….BUT to take her off dry food altogether – no moisture from it so we will be better. He also said to finish the medicine. I asked him about dental issues w/out dry food because I was told that it gets off placque and tartar from their teeth, he said that wasn’t proven. Since I’ve taken her off dry she seems much much better…so whaterver it was who knows. Has anyone experienced this w/their cats? Also, can anyone recommend a wet food brand for UTI’s besides Pro-Plan? I’m wondering if they would still help even thought that’s not what she had…..They all told me to make sure she gets alot of water, exercise and she’s not very playful on her own so it’s hard to find toys that she likes.Thank you,Linda
A: Your vet is right. Dry food is NOT proven to clean teeth. It cleans teeth no more than us humans eating crackers cleans our teeth. The ONLY 3 things possible that clean cats (or dogs) teeth is brushing the teeth with a toothbrush and special toothpaste, feeding them raw meaty bones or going to the vet and putting them under to clean the teeth. Also, dry food is linked to other health problems such as obesity, diabetes, UTI’s, renal failure, etc. The negatives of dry food really outweigh the positive. I do not feed any dry food to my cats after doing much, much research. I am not sure how amoxicillin will get rid of anything if they said no infection was found. Amoxicillin is an antibiotics specifically for infection. If you are able, could you take her to another vet for a second opinion? I probably wouldn’t let them do another urinalysis as that is rather stressful for the cat. You’ll want to feed a higher quality wet food as Pro Plan is a lower quality and I’ll point out why. Also, the Urinary form of the food only comes in 1 flavor and I promise you your cat will get sick of that same 1 flavor day in and day out very soon. Here are Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health Formula canned food ingredients: Water sufficient for processing, meat by-products, chicken, wheat gluten, corn starch-modified, natural and artificial flavors, soy flour, potassium chloride, taurine, tricalcium phosphate, salt, caramel color, Vitamin E supplement, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin A supplement, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), niacin, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), copper sulfate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, Vitamin B-12 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, cobalt carbonate, potassium iodide, biotin.B-4664By products are parts of the animal not deemed for human consumption. As you can see, they don’t even mention what animal, it just says meat. That could be anything. By products normally consist of feathers, beaks, head, feet, diseased meats.Wheat gluten is the cause for thousands of loved pets dying or becoming very unhealthy back in the 2007 mass recall of pet food.Soy flour is unnecessary.Salt is unnecessary.Any coloring is unnecessary. You will want to feed canned foods that do not contain by products, corn (maize, same thing as corn), soy, coloring, salt, sugar, gluten of any kind. You will also want a canned food that has a meat as the first or second ingredient, first is more favorable. High quality canned includes AvoDerm Select Cuts, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Wellness, Weruva, Evo, Merricks, Wysong, Newman’s Own, Petsmart’s Authority and there are others. These in general are more expensive but you will end up saving as, since you’ll be feeding higher quality food, you won’t have anymore expensive vet trips.
Blood in cat’s urine?
Q: My male, long haired kitten (10 months old) has been urinating in other places then the litter box for the past week (he will poop in the litter box). I’ve been keeping an eye on him to make sure that he’s not developing a behavior for not using the litter box. This morning I noticed that there was blood in his urine. I plan on making him an appoint with vet but can anyone tell me what this could mean? He’s eating fine and drinking fine.Thank you to anyone who can help.Kim
