Gall Bladder Surgery Experiences?
Q: My boyfriend has been in and out of the ER all weekend with severe stomach pain. At first they thought it was kidney stones, then gall stones, now they believe he has a disease. I don't know the scientific name (it ends in calculus) but more or less his gall bladder has a malformed artery so his gall bladder does not contract correctly. This is causing him to not be able to digest fats in the correct way. He is getting a test done on Monday where they inject him with a radio active dye and force his gall bladder to contract to see if it causes pain. This will show whether it is definitely his gall bladder and if he needs a liver transplant. The surgeon is pretty sure that he will need his gall bladder removed later this week. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or can tell us what to expect. Not really the surgery (I leave that to the doctors) but recovery time, pain levels, etc. The doctors said that its a pretty simple surgery and he would only be out of work for 2 weeks, but I'm worried about him and I know he's scared and we'd feel a lot better if we heard it from someone who experienced it. Thank you!
A: Hi there. No worries, really. Piece of cake. I just had my gallbladder removed last year after a bad hida scan. I had no gb function it was eating itself away, and I had stones. Due to my age (30) they never figured I could have gb disease and never tested it. So I suffered for 8 years.....ouch! Anyhoooo the sugury:I was knocked out, I was under for very short period of time. I had 3 tiny incisions.....not even noticeable, and none were stitched closed. Dr used steri strips. One lil incision in my bellybutton, one next to it, and one above it (they pull the gb out of this one). The hospital was going to send me home same day, but i was to punch drunk from the meds i stayed over night. I will say that night I was just drugged up. but not in pain, I ate, even used rest room on my own. I was sore it took about a week for me to sit/stand up straight. I walked with a hunch, and had NO energy. Total full recovery for me was 2 weeks out of work. That included everything from sore to energy levels to return to an 8 hour shift a day. But the uncomfortable "please help me, feed me, dress me" pain was under a week for sure!!!! Im a single parent, so this was important for me. I got help for 3 days with my son and myself...perfect.I feel so much better w/out gb attacks...only bad part of having the sugury is the severe IBS that comes after and can last years. Dont plan to do any outings that involve eating for a bit....everything comes out w/out notice. Im just now building my tolerance up and its been a year. New diagnosis is IBS -D and C. I also rare case somehow gained 40lbs post sugury...maybe cause i am able to eat and not suffer the pain?Really no worries its sugury but an easy one. Wish u luck. Any ? just email me
