What do you think are modern Americas greatest faults?
Q: I’m just curious as to what ailments our society/political system/culture etc you find in the United States to be absolutely bullshit. Just list them in order, and for simplicity, just have 1 or 3 sentences to point out each one. Use mine as an example.1. MLDA 21: The U.S. drinking age solves absolutely nothing, is proven absolutely unenforceable, and builds an entire perverted culture around alcohol for the younger generations. 2. Special Interests: to bring back MLDA 21: Mothers against drunk driving. Only the U.S. could have specified interest groups possessing some much sway in public policy, Laws should be looked in terms of broadmindedness, not whether or not it sounds good but to its consequences and to attempt to predict its unintended consequences.3. Political Culture: American politics is a nation of incumbents (which thankfully seems to be wavering). Politicians make ridiculous resolutions like the “anti-baby killer act”, which often times have no reasonable point other than to make some useless laws that the politician can later use as talking points in his campaign.4. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: I’m in the military, and I’m happy to see that this one will slowly be dissipated in my lifetime. 5. Celebrity Culture: We fawn over super athletes and the beautiful. How easy do you think it is to find a individual who can name all the top contestants in American Idol or the all the D-lineman on their college football team? Its probably a lot easier to find that person than someone who knows who were fighting in Afghanistan. We’ve placed more importance on beauty, fame, and wealth than whether your actually a morally sound person.6. The infantilization of our culture: We continue to treat people who are physically mentally developed adults as children, well into the mid 20s. We use the government and other institutions to nationalistically protect them “from themselves” with ridiculous restrictions. We then dump them in schools for a good quarter of their life where they’re completely shielded from adult interaction and develop a crude peer culture with people their fellow age. They follow this peer culture recklessly and we respond with more ridiculous restrictions.7. The Prison System: Americas “no tolerance” policy and the constant “I’m tough on criminals so vote for me again” kind of legislation has lead to overcrowded prisons and criminals who are rarely rehabilitated. I’m going to basically have to write a paper which is a broad review of the current state of America, and I’d for your help if you give me some ideas, or critique my own. Thanks!to Think Outside the Ballot Box, the numbers don’t really mean anything, I don’t know why I phrased the question that way. However… Even though MLDA 21 is clearly not the greatest problem in the United States today, I do think its the most prime example of the kind of political gridlock the United States is under. It shows just how easy in the U.S. it is to make dumb laws but how hard it is to get rid of them. I am underage, but the law gives our upcoming generation of adults an immediate reason on their 18th birthday to see society as a paternalistic nanny state that only sees them as children. Its not the most pressing problem right now, but it’s the most disgusting that its even a problem in the first place.
A: You seriously believe that the drinking age is the number one problem in American society? C;mon, dude. I’m politically active against the Texas Alcoholic Beverages Commission AND their biggest sponsor, MADD, but there’s no way that I would put liquor laws on the top of my list of priorities…
