I was told in the ER that i have Pleurisy, what causes this?
Q: I was sent home and told to take aspirin for a couple of days and thats it, but the ER doc was in a hurry and didnt tell me what causes Pluerisy, can this ever become a serious thing? i am a 20yr old female from wisconsin.
A: Ouch. Your lungs have an outer lining, and the inner chest wall has a lining. Normally these linings are smooth; inflammation can cause them to rub together. This causes painful breathing.Pleurisy can be caused by a viral infection. It can also be idiopathic (no known cause). Usually the symptoms are treated (with anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, Motrin, or Aleve) and the pleurisy resolves (goes away).Read more about pleurisy athttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pleurisy/DS00244http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/understanding-pleurisy-basicshttp://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/pleurisy-overview
What could be the cause of sharp pains on the left side of chest?
Q: I'm a 23 year old female, who is in fairly good health. I exercise normally and eat well. The only existing medical problem I know I have is asthma. Recently, I've been experiencing episodes of intense sharp pains on the left side of my chest at the top right side of my left breast. It lasts anywhere from a few minutes to all day on and off! its extremely hard to take deep breaths, which sometimes cause asthma attack. The best way I can describe the pain is like something is stuck, literally in my chest/heart, and its trying to push through. The pain sometimes radiates to my back, shoulder, left arm and neck. I've had pluerisy about 3 years ago and had a lung scan to check for clots to be safe. all was good. any ideas on what this could be???
A: It could be something like pleurisy. Or it could be this thing called Costochondritis. You should look that up and see if you think that's what you have. That said, I have asthma and I get this kind of thing to a minor degree, but eventually goes away. Sometimes it's after I've had a bad asthma attack and I feel like it's has irritated my chest muscles.
What is causing these sharp chest pains?
Q: I get these occasionally (1-3 times a year tops)....Last nite I woke up and I had this real sharp piercing pain in my chest)..I have had this happen on a few other occassions over the fast 3-4 years....Not sure what is causing it. I dont feel sick, I have not strained my self as far as I know. I had an incident back in 2004 or 05 where I pulled off the freeway b/c I was driving and this was the first time ever of getting this real sharp pain and I stopped at a nearby friends house, they called an ambulance, the hospital doctor stated it could be (something that starts with a P, maybe Pulmanary or Pluerisy and hadtwo other names that followed (there was a 3 letter abbreviation P _ _...but told me thy do not diagnose a patient with this until they have had more than one incident. I have been laid off and now work with no insurance so can not afford a doctor at this point, so trying to get a explanation of what MAY be going on with me.
A: It sounds like what i have been diagnosed with. Pre-cordial Catch Syndrome. Just sharpe pains in the chest. I get mine actually several times a day, but it can be to the least of once a year. I was told you can grow out of it and there is no treatment for it though. Just, make sure when they do happen, breath in deep severall times. It really helps :)! Just don't be too alarmed, its nothing to serious and it will go away. It usually happens when u are stressed out or severally sensitivee. Anyways, i am 100% ofthat'ss what it is. keep in touch :)!
