Q: "Agent Orange" is a chemical used to spary the land in Vietnam to kill vegetation during the war. It caused "Cancer" in our G.I.`s.
A: Actually it was not 'Agent Orange' that caused the problems. The danger came from the oil that was used to make the Agent Orange stick to the vegetation after spraying. As an economy move 'used' oil was bought for this purpose by Dow chemical. Some of this used oil came from electrical transformers - this oil was contaminated by a chemical known as 'PCB.' At the time the hazards of PCB was not known and in fact it was not until years after the Vietnam war ended that it was discovered that PCB is one of the most potent carcinogens known.Trivia note: It was not just the military who used this stuff 'Agent Orange' was a common industrial/agricultural herbicide during the 1960s. As a result there were many cancer deaths of people who worked in the agricultural and forestry industries.
