I have a teacher who absolutely HATES me for being a Type 1 Diabetic?
Q: I asked this in the Adolescent section, but most of the people who answered weren’t very educated about Diabetes, so I’m reposting it here. Hopefully some of you know how I feel.I’m a Type 1 Diabetic (I didn’t get it from eating too much sugar or lack of exercises, that’s the other kind) and I have a teacher who hates me for it. I have to leave period 5 a little bit early so I can go to the nurse before lunch, and at the beginning of the year my teacher was fine with it. I have 2 teachers in this class, and one of them isn’t that bad about it while the other one seems to HATE me for this. It’s not my fault I’m a Diabetic, and trust me if I didn’t have to have it I wouldn’t. Even though I don’t really like science, I really loathe leaving the class early (because everyone is looking at me and it’s embarrassing.) Well this teacher keeps being all snobby to me. Every time I get a bad grade she blames it on me leaving a few minutes early. She doesn’t know ANYTHING about what I have to go through or even what Diabetes IS – and she calls herself a science teacher. This is really bugging me and I don’t know what to do. Sometimes when I’m leaving she just calls out to me asking if I have a free period that day, or that she’ll “catch up with me later.” When I’m at my locker sometimes she comes out of the classroom to ask me if I NEED to leave early (which I obviously do — my school is crowded, I can never get a seat at lunch and by school rules I have to go to the nurse and call home with my numbers, so it definitely takes a while.) I don’t have great vision so it’s hard for me to see the clock, and sometimes if I leave 2 minutes early she yells at me for it and escorts me back into the classroom AND these teachers ALWAYS give out the material at the end of class, as well as push the quizzes to the last few minutes. It’s like they’re forcing me to stay when my blood sugar is dropping dangerously low without food (since I usually go low around that time at school.) Help? I really need advice from someone who understands. Thanks! =]- OCD**I meant 2 minutes earlier than I’m supposed to leave.**
A: It does sound like she is being unreasonable.I have found throughout my diabetic life and my long nursing career that when people act like this, it is because they are scared of what they don’t know.Do you have a diabetes centre near you you can contact and get them to send this teacher some info?Address it to her c/o the school.MAybe if she understands why and the importance of it, she may back off.How old are you? You should be learning to adjust your own insulin levels by now. As mentioned above, you can relax a bit and text your levels home if you have to. But gain some confidence and do it yourself. It only takes a minute to check your sugar and have a shot – you hardly need to get of class early anyway. Give it a go and gain some independence. It sounds a bit like your mum is trying to keep control. Sure she is worried about you but you are growing up and she needs to let go

Help?- OCDShe’s even confronted me a few times about it, and she thinks that I’m lieing when I say I need to leave class. She’s all like:”Are you SURE you need this much time?”Or if I leave like 2 minutes early by accident (since I have bad vision and it’s difficult for me to see the clock sometimes) she escorts me back into the classroom. It’s so humiliating. She’s even confronted me a few times about it, and she thinks that I’m lieing when I say I need to leave class. It’s so humiliating. You can’t get better from Type 1. I’ll have it forever unless they find a cure. And let me tell you, it sucks major elephant abortions.=/The two guys who answered -FIRST OF ALL I CAN’T STOP BEING A DIABETIC. YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH I WANT TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE RIGHT NOW. I HOPE YOU GET TYPE 1 DIABETES. IN FACT I WILL PRAY THAT YOU DO, BECAUSE YOU ARE AN IGNORANT SON OF A BITCH. I CAN NOT STOP BEING A DIABETIC. IT’S NOT MY FAULT THAT I GOT IT. I’VE HAD OVER 1,000 NEEDLES INJECTED INTO ME IN MY LIFE TIME.And to the first guy – you don’t know what having Diabetes (TYPE 1) is like in school. Having shitty friends doesn’t help either, considering they don’t save a seat for me at lunch.
A: Wow that’s tough.I hope you get better♥Anyway, as for your teacher I would have my parents set up a meeting with her, so they could take to her and let her know why you’re leaving and ask her to give you the material beforehand, or in the beginning of class. She probably doesn’t think it’s as serious as it really is, and think you’re goofing off in the halls during the period that you’re gone. Which is a typical thing for a teacher to think. But, teachers somewhat have to listen to what parents or the principal has to say since they’ve got more power over them, so tell your parents to come to school.Don’t be embarrassed about it either.=]
What should I do about these two teachers?
Q: I’m a Type 1 Diabetic (nothing to do with eating too much or lack of exercise – that’s the other type..) and I have to leave my fifth period class about 10 minutes early to go to the nurse to test my blood sugar and give insulin for what I’m about to eat at lunch the following period. Every year I do this, and the teachers never seem to be happy about it. This year, it’s just as bad. The two teachers I have for fifth period are extremely strict, and even as science teachers they don’t understand that as a Diabetic I NEED to give insulin for meals and it takes a while. They embarrass me in front of the class by saying things along the lines of “Since you have to leave early…” and it just brings unwanted attention to my condition. Trust me, if I didn’t HAVE to leave science early I wouldn’t. I love science (well..on a good day..) and I hate being looked at every time I leave the room. The teachers keep taking it out on me though, and they seem to be doing everything they can to get me to stay. I don’t know what their problem is, it’s not like I’m missing much anyway. But it seems that lately they’re making it harder for me to leave (since I’m shy and I don’t like it when people stare at me.) They stand by the door, talk for what seems like eternity, push the tables closer together so I can’t get out, go over homework before we take a quiz/test and hold us eight minutes after the bell, and even hold the most important worksheets until the end of class. Then they act like it’s MY fault that I’m missing the material. But I really don’t want to talk to them about it since like I said I’m THAT shy, and last year when my mom confronted the teacher about not letting me leave early it just caused problems. So I really don’t know what to do. Any advice? And is it fair what my teachers are doing? I just don’t see what their problems are. xP Thanks! :)- OCDWhy the hell would I make this up?! I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic for almost 5 years now! I am NOT making this up. If you had Diabetes you would see how hard it is. We have to deal with ignorant people on a daily basis, including teachers. =[
A: i kinda of know how that feels but in a not as serious way. when i was in 8th grade i left fifth period (entire period) once a week because i was part of the middle school band and that is when we practiced. The 8th grade class is divided into 5 clusters and each one is like am mini school. I was in 8-3 but the cluster that had all of the people in band was 8-4. i tried to switch into that cluster but my counselor wouldn’t let me. so anyways whenever i left she would always give me these weird looks like why are you leaving my class, and she hated me that entire year because i was in band. I hate it when teachers get mad at you for things that aren’t you fault. it wasn’t my fault that my counselor was a bitch and didn’t put me in the band cluster and its not you fault you are diabetic. im a stubborn person so that entire year i was always act really happy when she got mad at me when i left for band it was kinda like a fuck you im leaving kinda thing and i enjoyed it. since i don’t think you like me i would suggest getting you parents involved and have the nurse talk to you teachers.
