Biology ~~ Human cities are generally places of relatively rapid environmental change.?
Q: Humans dam rivers, knock down buildings, and pave grassy areas on a regular basis. Yet some creatures, like mice and cockroaches, thrive in cities. What kind of life-history pattern do you think mice and cockroaches have? Explain the reason for your answer.
A: The answer is basic population dynamics. The pattern is no different than any other type of species. Living things thrive where there is an abundance of resources. When resources are without limitation, species will exponentially grow. Cities provide a utopia for these particular species. In addition to the availability of resources, what natural predators are there in an urban environment? Besides Terminx and the occasional "alley cat" the mouse and cockroach are almost free of predation. So, think about it. An abundance of food, mating and protection and an absence of predation equals mice and cockroaches "partying like rock-stars!"
