Power Symbols in Portraits of Absolute Monarchs?
Q: What does a red velvet canopy symbolize in a portrait of an absolute monarch? I'm doing a project on a portrait of King Louis XIII and I have to say what the different symbols of power are in the painting. There is a red velvet canopy with gold fringe above him. I know this symbolizes wealth because of the gold and velvet, but does it symbolize anything else?
A: It's a canopy of state, or baldachin."[In France] The throne or great chair stood under a canopy of state - it was as much a symbol of royal power as a chair to sit on."http://www.vam.ac.uk/microsites/baroque/exhibition/secular-spaces.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldachinhttp://books.google.co.uk/books?id=8bWo5T2JdVUC&pg=PA46&lpg=PA46&dq=symbols+of+royal+power+-+canopy+of+state&source=bl&ots=MN9EffCSt8&sig=ogBSjdL-IXWyxO50vWwbFffK4sY&hl=en&ei=RfDDSp7BEJ-6jAeZ9dTJBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8#v=onepage&q=&f=falseIn this picture of Henry VIII, you can see that he (King) and his son (heir and next King) and Jane Seymour (Queen who gave him his heir) are seated under the canopy of state to signify their royalty. Why do symbols of power work in our society?
Q: please could you write me a smalll explanationan example of a symbol of power is a queen crown
A: Because symbols bear an impression in the minds of the people specially if behind the symbol is a personality/religion/ or their nation's identity which is closely attached to their personal lives. It works because majority of the people conforms to it. If the symbol represents success, hope, security, and other kind of human needs, the symbol will stick and influence an individual's way of life despite his race, educational background and religion. As long as the symbol has a personal significance, it will work in the micro and macro scale.
