V. important: Keeping heartburn under control.?

Q: Hello everyone,I have quite high levels of acid in my stomach and of course heartburn. Sometimes it gets so bad that it is very hard for me to speak – But, I have a very very imporantant public presentation (speech) to make on Monday and need something to calm my heartburn at least for those 30min when I’ll make the presentation.I’ve tried the followings:Omeprazole – helps a little but not 100%;Zantac – helps a little (almost like omez);Xanax – seems to help more than both zantac and omez…Metoclopramide – when I get nausea from heartburn, but I hardly feel any effects…water, beer, smoking, stress – make it much much worse…Any ideas on how should I get this under control at least for my presentation, would be greately appreciated.Thanks,W

A: Have you tried Prilosec? That works well for me,but it’s a longterm commiment. You can’t just take it for special occasions. I would recommend, Not eatting for 3 hours before your speech, and no water. The water just helps the acid to reach higher up into the esophagus.Stay away from soda ,acidic foods and fats. Try lean meats instead of things like salami’s and bologna or bacon and sausage. Same thing at bedtime, no food or water for 3 hours before bedtime. Otherwise everything just starts to roll up your esophagus as soon as you lay down.

I usually take half of a peach one so I think the dosage is .25 or .2.5???? I have to take prilosec for H.Pylori. I am done with the antibiotic (thank goodness…I took my last antibiotic at 3p.m. today.) I have to take prilosec for 2 more weeks. I don’t really want too..I still feel like crap..not from the ulcer but it seems like from the meds. I still have a nasty taste in my mouth and my tummy is queasy. I haven’t been sleeping either. So my body is stressed.How long does the prilosec stay in your body? The clarithromycin(sp)?Since I’m trying to eradicate H.pylori is there something else I could take instead of prilosec…something easier on the tummy? A: Prilosec is not an anti boitic to fight your Hlecobacter Pylori, but the Clarithromycin is. Prilosec helps reduce the acid in your stomach, and with the reflux you seem to have – nasty taste in mouth and queasy stomach. You would most likely get more of that taste without the Prilosec. If it’s alright for you to eat soda crackers (Saltine cracker), eat that instead of peach. Stay with your medicine, otherwise, tell your doctor about it so, he could give you a different way of dealing with your problem – if it’s available. If you are allowed, you can take some Gaviscone (a stronger form of TUMS), to help with your acid in your stomach.
