How can almonds be good for you if they are so fattening?
Q: I don’t eat meat and have been told I should eat almonds. However, they are so fattening… how can they possibly be good for me if I’m trying to maintain a healthy weight?
A: Have a handful not a bag full. They’re full of good fats and proteins, and they’re very good for you in moderation. Nuts also contain a zillion good nutrients. 24 almonds (about a handful) is enough to make you feel full if you have a glass of water afterward (due to their dietary fiber content. Water makes the nut meat swell, which makes you feel full). Here’s why almonds rock:They’re high in protein, low in carbs, have dietary fiber, they have good oils, good fats, vitamin E, low cholesterol, magnesium, phosphorus, and they fight cancer! And more…!So long as you’re eating real almonds (skin on) and not salted or smoked almonds, they’re a great healthy snack!
I love almonds as a snack, but how many are good without being too fattening?
Q: Almonds are healthy, aren’t they? They make a great snack, but what’s a good amount to snack on without it being too fattening?
A: Get raw almonds, and you can have about 25 a day and it is great for you! They protect your heart, help your digestion, and are good for your brain. Choosing raw over salted, roasted or flavored almonds gives you a fresh flavor, and you can always lightly salt them yourself or roast if you prefer, but the commercial ones are pretty loaded with junk. I get mine from a bulk food store, and they are inexpensive, fresh and very tasty. We do best at easy measuring for snacks by either using a double shot glass full, a handful, or counting out 25 in little lunch bags and having them in a low cal snack assortment on our counter for when you need a fix of something. (We also have single serving size snacks of raisins, dried cherries, other nuts, and once in awhile potato chips or something. Doing the portion sizes up like this helps you “stop” eating at the right time.)They are also great added to salads. Enjoy! Its a healthy snack.
