starting a family?
Q: i want to start a family of my own one day and i was curoius about do this stuff carry over. I am sickle cell trait and when I was younger from some months old to 1 to 2 years of years of age I use to have seizures for no reason. My family has a history of heart failure, high blood pressure, mental illness, diabetes, and sickle cell. Will this carry over to my children? Will my family health history affect my child? i hope not and all answers are appreciated. I want serois answers too. Thanks
A: As it is your family history, yes these things can be passed on to your child, just as they were passed on to you. You might just want to talk to your doctor at your regular exam or when you get closer to starting your family about the chances and risks of the conditions you've described. Here is something interesting I found about sickle cell-- "Did you read the articles about the parents with sickle cell trait who had babies who did not have sickle cell trait or sickle cell anemia? This is the result of a method of in vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnosis, used by investigators that guaranteed their babies would not have Sickle Cell Anemia."
