Should I have my kitten tested for Feline Leukemia?
Q: I had my now 4 month old kitten to the vet for his booster shots, and asked the vet to check his eyes because one was smaller than the other and I wanted to be sure of what was wrong. The vet said that one of his pupils are fixed, and that he could go blind in that eye and as it is he has poor vision in it. I have to decide if I can afford to pay for the eye specialist when he is in, but I’ll start saving money since that’s not til September. The vet said that I could be a sign of feline leukemia, and that I could test him when he gets fixed. But from what I’ve read there’s no cure, and treatment is expensive and doesn’t work all the time.I have no other cats and no plans to have anymore cats, he’s an indoor only cat (he HATES the outside, scared of cars), and perfectly healthy otherwise. Would it be better to just not know?
A: It would be best to have him tested. It’s one of those things that’s important to know. If he would be FeLV positive (and he’s probably not) they treat any illnesses more aggressively. There is no cure or treatment for FeLV – just a different way of managing illness. I’d have him tested, it will most likely be negative, then your mind will be at ease. And worst case he’s positive – you can take steps to ensure the best life possible for him.
What do You Think about Letting Cats Outside?
Q: I honestly feel that cats should be indoor animals only. Cats may sometimes act cocky and independent, but they are as defenseless as toddlers in the concrete jungle. Cats allowed to roam outside unattended may be attacked by dogs, stolen by dogfighters to use as “bait” or by thieves who sell animals to labs, or shot or poisoned by neighbors who don’t like them digging in the flowerbeds or climbing on their cars. Cats who roam outside are also exposed to deadly diseases like feline AIDS and feline leukemia, for which there is no cure. Cats can adapt nicely to life indoors if they get plenty of playtime and other ways to exercise their agile minds. From paper bags and rolled up balls of paper to motorized “mice” and laser pointers, toys perk up even the laziest feline. All-time favorites are Cat Dancer and Cat Charmer. Windows are cat “TV”—a birdbath or feeder placed near a window can provide hours of entertainment. What do you think?
A: I totally agree about keeping cats indoors. The last time I had an outdoor cat, he got loose and ran away. We found him at the bottom of the alley we live on and he’d been shot with a BB gun in the leg. Since then, I’ve only allowed my cat to stay inside.
My Cat Is Sick!?
Q: My cat is now around 1 years old. We adopted him from a shelter 5 months ago. He was sick ever since we got him. We were told by them that he had a cold. They gave us Clovomox. After the treatment he didn’t get better so we took him to the vet and again he was given clovomox. He never did get better. I tried treating him for Feline Leukemia with colloidal silver but he never did get better. My cat’s symptoms are chronic sneezing, vomiting if I don’t restrict the amount of food he is given and the occasional hacking which sounds like a dog trying to clear it’s throat. He doesn’t have the typical leukemia symptoms. I am worried about the longevity of his life and we have tried aspirin when I thought he had a cold. We tried hemp milk and molases vitamins and expensive cat foods to boost immunity and that didn’t work. My vet said he can never get fixed because he is chronically sick and that testing would be pointless because there is no cure. What is wrong with my Russian BlueThank you all who replied to my question. My vet went over the possible options of what my cat may have and told me even with test results that there wasn’t a cure for any of the above conditions. So I did seek someone else and I went to a holistic animal practitioner who advised me that the collodial silver was going to clear it up and keep symptoms from flaring.I knew the aspirin wasn’t good for my cat. I was worried my cat was in pain so I tried giving him a baby aspirin for that. My cat only ever gets better for a whole 12 hours where he will have a clear nose. My cat is happy and doesn’t look sick other than a runny nose but I am worried about the longevity of his life.Do you think my cat will die?I cannot bring my cat back to the shelter. We adopted him out of the city a 4 hour car ride and we adopted him when he was approx a 6 month old kitten. Thanks again for your input.
A: #1 sweety FIND ANOTHER VET!!!! I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess at this, I am not a vet, but I have 3 cats and 2 dogs, and one of my dogs was doing the very same-thing, It may be allergies, We could not figure out what was wrong with our dog, he had a cold for a while, then my vet it could be allergies and he was right!!!! my boy is allergic to FOOD COLORING, not saying its food coloring that your cat is allergic to, but I would try another vet and have him checked for allergies, although testing is expensive, your vet can put your kitty on a special diet and see how he does, or you can try it your self, take all dry and canned cat food away, feed him baked or boiled chicken feed him only this for 7 days, see what happens, if he clears up great if not then try tuna in water, for 7 days, just keep trying you will figure out whats wrong, I am only telling you this because this is what I had to do with my puppy, hopefully it will work for you, DONT GIVE UP, your kitty needs you
