And the "information" they provide is at best colored by self-interest, at worst a pile of lies (there are many disreputable brokers; I had problems with two different brokerage firms within a few months of moving to NYC). This year, with the economy/NYC real estate market in shambles, two things have changed: it's easier to find available units on your own (such as through craigslist, or by simply walking around a neighborhood calling the phone numbers on signs), and broker fees have dropped (in many cases the landlord is paying the fee such that the renter pays $0). So there is even less need than there used to be for working through a broker, but on the other hand it might be worth it for $0!
