Does anything have an effect on folic acid being absorbed into your body?
Q: I recently lost our little girl to spina bifida and hydropcephalus. I’ve been put on a higher prescribed dosage of folic acid to help protect future pregnancies. Is there anything that stops the folic acid entering your body? The reason I ask is because I was taking folic acid (the one you buy in the shops) throughout my pregnancy but I was also on lots of other medication (mainly pain killers prescribed by the doctor) and I want to know if these stopped the folic acid from being absorbed? This is so I can avoid taking them in future so I can keep my folic acid levels up in my body before I conceive and throughout the next pregnancy! The reason I was on so many pain killers was because I was in extreme pain at the beginning of the pregnancy. This was down to the massive cysts I had on my ovaries. They kept bursting leaving me with intense pain! I couldn’t move it was that bad. The pain killers I was on included;Paracetamol (obvious one)Codine PhosphateCo Codamol (not at same time as above two) Solphadol (think it’s same as above – again didn’t take at same time).I was also on hayfever tablets (being told ok to use in pregnancy) but can’t remember the name (not a branded name prescribed) and anti-sickness tablets!
A: I am so sorry to hear that you lost your girl. My guess would be that some of the ingredients in the pain killers affected the absorption of folic acid. Besides, why would a doctor even prescribe so many pain killers during pregnancy??You know there are tons of information online. Going forward, I suggest you research any other medications you might be taking to see if it affects the absorption of folic acid. Please, don’t go by what the doctors says alone, most of them make mistakes and i believe that was what happened. I always research everything before i take heed to my doctor’s advice. Anyway, i pray that God will bless you with another baby as soon as you desire one. I also pray that your preceding pregnancies will be much more healthier! Here is what i found regarding folic acid. http://www.medscape.com/article/200184-overviewwishing you God’s best.

It is especially important for women who are at higher risk for osteoporosis after menopause.Folic acid (folate) is especially important during pregnancy and is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells.
