if your on a wheat and gluten-free diet is it still ok to drink scotch whisky?
Q: or other distilled drinks such as vodka and brandy etc…someone told me that the distillation process removes the gluten.indeed mitch yes i am talking about small quantities. a glass or 2 in the evening.
A: I have celiac disease (gluten intolerance) and have actually looked at this in depth. The distillation process leaves gluten in the mash, which means you can drink most distilled spirits. However, some distillers mix a small portion of the mash back into the distilled product to add an additional level of flavor. Jack Daniels (last time I toured the distillery) mixes mash in the distillate. Jim Beam does not. I have not toured any scotch distilleries, but I’ve never had a problem after drinking scotch (unless I consumed too much, which is a different issue). By the way, high-quality, dark rums are NOT colored with wheat, like some people say. They are made purely from sugar-cane. Spiced rums, however, could have a gluten containing ingredient mixed in.
Is coke gluten free?
Q: I drank some Jack and coke this weekend (left over from New Years from my bf). Of course, this morning I woke up and got sick from it. So I’m sure it was the Jack Daniels even though I thought it was distilled. I was trying to find out online if Coke was too. I keep getting mixed answers. Some say yes and some say no. I’m not a big coke drinker, but I do miss the occasional whiskey and coke . I guess I should just stick to wine to stay safe. This is a gluten problem, not an alcohol problem.
A: According to the Coke site, Coke (and most other Coke products) are Gluten free.HOWEVER, Jack Daniels is an alcohol that I avoid as a Celiac. Yes if alcohol is distilled its gltuen free, HOWEVER, I dont think that Jacks is completely distilled. I Think some coloring is often added after distillination that makes it no longer gluten free. Many Celiacs avoid whisky I know jsut to be safe.Try this sites and see if it helps www.glutenfreedrinks.com. U can also try contacting the Jacks company via their website but dont expect a clear answer bc alcohol companies are not as obligated to give info on gluten as food comps are.Good luck. Try a rum and coke instead! 🙂
