Q: ...good friend collapsed. It's cancer. I'm his medical proxy. What do I tell his employers? What about health insurance?I have a good friend who recently collapsed. He turned out to have a late-stage case of a *relatively* treatable/curable form of cancer. He has no next of kin, so I and another of his friends are his medical proxies. He is not rational or lucid most of the time, and when he is, he still can't deal with this. He's terrified.Health insurance: He gets it through his work, but at this point it's not clear that he's going to be able to go back to work. He's going to spend at least another month in the hospital - and possibly much longer. Even when (if?) he gets out, he may well be too weak to work for half a year or more (which is how long the chemo will probably take). We're short on info, but trying to learn more.If he loses his medical insurance, we fear he won't survive (which is not a sure thing in any case - but we are going to do our best to get him the best odds and treatment possible). What health options are there for the unemployed? Would the FMLA apply? He's not rich.
A: I would urge you to take one step at a time - where does your friend's employer think he is? The first thing that has to be done is to tell the employer he is ill and wants to go on disability, an insurance-type coverage that pays a small amount of money while a worker is out ill. FMLA is a possibility, but there is no payment involved in that.He needs to start billing his insurance company - see if you can get his card and have his bill taken care of. As long as someone is on disability and FMLA they are still connected to the company. There is no reason to jump to believing that he will not have a job.If he should lose his health insurance, which is too soon to contemplate, there is what is called in our state, emergency Medicaid. One of the best things for you to do is to connect with the social worker at the hospital who covers your friend's unit. If there is not one, go to the business office - but only if the social worker assistance is not available.He is not unemployed at the moment - dont rush things. You guys need to remain calm and start getting as smart as you can get! It is a complex system, but do it one task at a time.Hope this gives you some reassurance.
