Serious dilemma. Cancer ruining our lives together. Anyone with a similar experience please help me….?

Q: I’ve been with this guy for 4 years and I truly love him. He is so kind and romantic and giving to everyone. And we get along so well and have so much fun together. So we decided last summer to start trying to have a baby, I was sooo happy(he’s 38 and I’m 29). We tried for four months with no luck until we found out my partner had cancer. He immediately banked some sperm just in case the cancer treatments caused infertility. He’s been getting chemo treatments since september and doing quite well so far, he hasn’t been feeling himself but not very sick either. He still works everyday and goes about his normal business. He is such a trooper. I help him when he gets home because he is tired but doesn’t like to admit it. The doctor said he might only need 8 treatments instead of 12. So I’m thinking great he’s doing so well, he’s going to be cured. He’ll beat this and we can take some time and get back to our lives together. Now he tells me that he doesn’t think he wants kids anymore because he’s worried the cancer might come back in the future and he doesn’t want to leave his kids and their mother alone. He says he loves me and thinks I’m the nicest most caring person he’s ever met, but wants me to move on and find someone else because he knows how badly I want children. He says he just wants me to be happy and that we could still be best friends. I’m having a really hard time with this situation and I just don’t know what to do. On the one hand, I know he’s right…I do want to be with a man who wants children and wouldn’t be having them just to please me. And I’ll be 30 in a few months…the clock is ticking. But on the other hand, I can’t picture anyone else being as great as he is or me being as happy and comfortable as I am with him. And, the thought of leaving him while he’s sick is unimaginable to me. I can’t let him go through this alone. I told him we’ll discuss it more when he’s well and see if he still feels the same way, but this dilemma is something that goes through my head at least once a day. He also says he feels like he’s wasting my time and he doesn’t want to feel that way – he said it stresses him out. But I say I’m not leaving – I love him and I want him to be taken care of and make sure that he’s comfortable. What can we do to stay sane?He has hodgkin’s disease, stage 2. He gets chemo treatments every other week, no radiation therapy currently.I’m not the one that brings this up, I would rather not talk about kids or staying together or anything until he’s well. Will Cancer/Leukemia reduce your life even after cured?

Q: My fiance’ had Cancer in her early teen years. She was a Freshman when told she had Leukemia. She fought through it and by her Junior year, it had cleared… she had a very serious case of it. Now, after blood work and what not… she found out she is completely clean. I was told you could never be 100% clean after having it… so is this true or false on her word? She is sometimes to embarrassed to talk to me in detail about it. Well, I was wondering… even though she fought through it, and is okay, and has been for about 8 years now… because she had it, will it shorten her life-span? Meaning, do most Cancer / Leukemia survivors usually die before that of someone who never had it? If so… whats the usual life-span for one who has been previously diagnosed?

A: Life is terminal for all of us. There is no such thing as a shortened life span since human beings are mortal to begin with. There is no guarantee that you will survive or that she will survive to old age. However, please keep in mind that medical advances are being made on a daily basis to determine all of these questions. There is always hope. The fact that your friend has survived for 8 years with no evidence of disease is very, very positive. Even 20 years ago children with leukemia would not have survived even this long. Hep B..and insurance?

Q: One of my close friends is a Hep B inactive carrier. He is perfectly healthy now. He wants to buy health insurance since he is afraid that if he may have serious case like liver cancer in future, he doesnt have capacity to treatment. Will he able to buy insurance since i see most of insurance ask for declaring pre-exisitng illness. What happen if he hides the fact and if he is attacked with liver cancer will he be able to claim any medical cost?

A: Chances are he will be required to have a physical by the insurance company’s doctor, or a doctor contracted by the insurance company on their behalf. He won’t be able to hide it, and probably won’t be able to get insurance. If he has chronic hep B (HBV), it is not inactive. Most people don’t have any symptoms of HBV or Hep C (HCV), yet the virus is causing damage (called fibrosis) to the liver. He could probably get insurance through an employer, if he goes to work for a large corporation. They often accept the employees without any problems. They may make him wait a year before pre-existing conditions are covered, though, but it would be worth it. Best wishes.
