Q: ok, i know this is very long, but i really wanted to add as many details as possible, and i hope some of you will take the time to read it and give me some advice, cause it’s something really serious for me….some time ago, my son (17) joined me at selfdefense class. we had to hold us by the arms, and try to free ourselves from each other. we both struggled, but we were pretty much equally strong. at one point he started kicking my shins, trying to get me down. so then i raised my leg and swung my foot up between his legs (before class, i gave him the protection devices that i told him were NECESSARY and REQUIRED) and it landed right in his groin….he looked at me kinda dumb, but didn’t loose his grib on my arms. my leg was still up, so i kicked a second time. now he let go of my arms, and i thought “fine, i succeeded”….but then he made this weird face and started to moan. he doubled over and slowly went down on his knees. i asked him what was going on, and he said he didn’t put on the cup. i was really really shocked to hear this, and the first thing that got on my mind, was “stupid kid!” and i started to tell him off, and said it was his own fault.but then i realized that he was in really deep agony, and that it wasn’t very nice of me, especially in that situation. i felt really bad and guilty, and started to apologize, saying “i’m sooo sorry, honey” over and over again. the instructor noticed what has happned and she helped me to get him up and sit him down on a bench in the locker room. she then told him to sit upright and breathe deeply and so on, but he was rocking back and forth and moaning and moaning and moaning. i was holding his hand and wanted to ease the situation with a joke, and said “honey? do you think there’s still a chance for me to become a grandma someday?” and i laughed about my own silly joke. but my son kept on moaning and stammered out “please mom, my balls hurt so much….i think they’re broken or something”, so i stopped laughing. a couple of minutes later, he said his stomach is aching. the instructor brought him a bucket, and then he started VOMITTING into it….it was horrible.after this i was worried of course, so i drove him to the doctor right after class. after he’d been examined, i had a talk with the doctor. she said that “there’s no permanent demage, and therefore no reason to worry”, and i felt a big relief. but she also told me that his whole groin area had been under so much pressure during the last hour, that while she examined his testicles (which hurt him a lot, since she had to palpate his testes of course), he was having an ejaculation….i was really shocked to hear this, but she assured me it was “a common reaction, since both his testicles are swollen, which gives him an agonizing pounding-/throbbing-like feeling in his testes, and this was his body’s way to relief some of the pressure”….she also said that it’s possible that he will experience this pain for more than a day. she put on some special kind of bandage on his testicles, that would prevent too much movement in his groin, especially during the night. she also gave him an oinment that he had to apply on his testicles twice a day. after 3-4 days he was fine again and he took off the bandage, but he kept applying the ointment for another two days.i regularly asked him how his testicles were doing since then and whether they were still swollen and still aching, and he always answered even though he obviously felt very uncomfortable with me talking about his balls (i once made the mistake to ask him in front of girlfriends of his sister, and so they learned of what happened, and he felt even more ashamed in that situation)….and another big part of his embarrassment is that he has a huge crush on the instructor, who is a 26 year old female. the first day he came back to class (yes, we still go there together), she asked him about his testicles in front of everyone (mostly girls/women)….that wasn’t very appropriate of her either.it happened over two months ago, and he still feels embarrassed around me, but i’ve already stopped mentioneing it, so he could forget it. but he is so reproachful towards me, now HE is the one mentioning it all the time….he says he didn’t put on the gear because he didn’t think i would do that, even though we talked about it before (i told him it was part of the training to aim for that area, and he said he would wear it), and he also mentions a lot how he sometimes still feels a throbbing in his testicles. i can understand him somehow, since it was not only deep physical pain, but also the fact that HIS OWN MOM KICKED HIM IN THE BALLS IN FRONT OF OTHERS, and even IN FRONT OF HIS MAJOR CRUSH….but on the other hand, it was his own fault, cause he assured me he would wear the protection cup. so in the end, i feel really really sorry for him, but i don’t feel like i really did something wrong. now here are some questions….- shouldn’t i have kicked him in the groin, even if he was wearing the cup?- was it very inappropriate of me to make this infertility-joke, or wasn’t this too bad?- should i have brought him to another doctor than our usual one, since she is a female (and a young one)?- should i have stayed outside while he was being examined? (i was only in the same room, but i stayed behind him so i wouldn’t see anything of course, and of course i didn’t notice he was having an ejaculation, but i don’t know if he wanted me to leave or not) or was it right of me not to let him alone in that situation?- was it a very big mistake to ask him about his balls in front of other girls and let them know what has happened, or didn’t that matter anymore?- besides not mentioning it anymore, what else can i do so he FINALLY FEELS COMFORTABLE AROUND ME again?thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to read this.
A: If it was part of the self-defense training, then you were right to kick like you did, but it sounds like maybe the second time wasn’t such a good idea. He should have been wearing the cup.The situation didn’t call to be made light of with a joke, although you probably meant well, best just to leave it alone.A doctor is a doctor, if they are qualified, age and sex should not make a difference. They’ve seen it all day everyday in any case and aren’t really easily shocked.Yes, you should have stayed outside of the exam room. He’s 17. At 17, I would have been mortified if my mom came in a room with me, and I’m female. He’s almost an adult, mommy doesn’t need to be there with him every second. If he was suffering a gunshot wound and about to die, fine, I understand why you would feel the need to stay with him, but something like this? No. It wasn’t appropriate for you to be there in the exam room.It was a huge mistake to ask him about something so personal in front of anyone at all, girls or not. Think about it like this, how would you feel if he asked you about your privates in front of people, particularly men?You need to just leave the situation alone. He’ll get over it eventually. It’s very fresh and he’s going to have a wounded ego for a bit, but it’ll pass over. It’s one of those things you just need to ignore. Too much mothering is not a good thing. He’s a teenager, and this crisis will only last as long as it takes the next big thing in his life to happen.PS: Don’t mean to sound harsh, just trying to answer all of your questions.
should i feel really guilty, or was it his own fault?
