How accurate are the cancer-death statistics reported by the American Cancer Society?
Q: I have checked with others and we are concerned that the fiqures are not accurate in regards to the number of deaths from cancer each year. Death certificates indicate death from respiratory or heart failure or some other condition. But these complications were the result of the cancer the person had. I don’t believe the American people are being given a true picture about the number of deaths due to cancer each year. And what can be done to make the reports more accurate? The question is about accuracy! If death certificates list respiratory failure as the cause of death, instead of the cancer that caused the respiratory failure, then there are cancer daeths that are not being recordedm right? The question is about accuracy! If death certificates list respiratory failure as the cause of death, instead of the cancer that caused the respiratory failure, then there are cancer deaths that are not being recorded, right?
A: The problems is that older ppl that have cancer have other diseases especially heart problems and they die from those other diseases before the cancer. It isn’t the cancer that kills them. Believe it or not there are many people that die of natural causes have cancer. It isn’t misleading it is just the way it is. You need to have a better understanding of cancer instead of your assuming false information of inaccurate reporting.
How can I get the American Cancer Society to quit harassing me?
Q: They have called almost daily for weeks at a time and ignore my request to take me off the list and STOP CALLING!! I have donated to the Cancer Walks, fund raisers, door to door requests, etc. I am to the point of changing charities.
A: You joined YA answers just to ask how to stop the cancer society from calling you? It makes no sense. They have my number and I have cancer and they don’t call me, except the time they gave me a gas card for my long trips to radiation treatments. Maybe you shouldn’t be giving your number out so freely?
How much money does the CEO of American Cancer Society make?
Q: I have breast cancer, double mastectomy. Do you think he may loan me money for a breast replacement? He makes over 900,000 a year!!!!!!!1How many nickels and dimes does that take to fill up a jar at the local Speedy Mart just to pay him to hold this position of CEO?
A: Good question and excellent point you’ve already made. That CEO should donate $800,000 of his $900,000 income to real cancer patients.Who really needs more than $100,000 per year?I made $100,000 only 3 years of the 20 years that I was a cancer specialist doctor. The ACS has always bothered me. They were never any help for my patients who needed financial support. We raised money locally, and it went somewhere – but the money never helped any of my local patients. I could not see where the money did any good in the fight against malignancies. Those of us in the trenches fighting cancer paid for the chemotherapy drugs that patients could not afford. Drug companies did not help in the 1980’s and neither did the American Cancer Society. I called them myself asking them to help my patients.I hope there is some research that has been useful coming from ACS fund raisers. I’d like to see someone provide data on money well spent by them. The wikipedia article on the ACS mentions some nobel prize winners – but I’m not convinced that the many billions of dollars donated have been spent wisely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Cancer_SocietyI was a volunteer for the ACS in my early years of practice. I thought they would ask me to give talks – which they did on occasion. But usually they would have me spending my rare days off taking tickets at some fund raiser or another – at a time when I was seeing cancer patients at five hospitals and working over 100 hours per week. I worked 26 of every 30 days then – so there were only four days off per month. I grew tired on sitting behind a table doing things that anyone could do. When I quit, the paid person who headed the local cancer society told me I didn’t care about cancer patients. I’ll never forgive that. At that time, I figured that half of the hours I worked were free care for cancer patients. They were all like family to me. I saw more of my patients than I saw my wife and kids.I do hope someone gets on this question and credibly defends the American Cancer Society. Prove me wrong – please !Looking at this site – http://www.acs-inc.com/pages_exp.aspx?id=512 – the ACS is hauling in over $6.5 billion, yet none of my patients who called ever received any financial help. The Wikipedia summary of the ACS history mentions that fraud and abuse have been problematic – incuding lies about the proportion of donated funds that truly went to patients or research. We have had enough of greed and lies in this country (the USA). It is especially despicable to take advantage of people who work and donate – – thinking they are helping cancer patients. I always advise people to donate to their local Hospice organization instead.Yes, I know this is an extreme view colored by my own experience with the ACS. I don’t mind being proven wrong.74,000 paid employees. So much for a volunteer organization of caring people.
