Why doesn’t my mum want me to get the jab against cervical cancer?
Q: So my school are offering the jab against cervical cancer to everyone is school and they sent out a leaflet and letter of consent to be eligible to get it. I asked my mum if I could get it and she said “No, you don’t need it because you aren’t sexually active” this makes no sense to me and I don’t understand why she won’t let me have. If it protects me against cervical cancer then why not. If you understand why she doesn’t want me to have it please can you explain please. Thanks in advance.
A: Let’s get all the misinformation out of the way first.•There is no cancer vaccine. It is an HPV vaccine. They are 2 different things.•HPV is a risk factor for cervical cancer not for ovarian cancer.•No one has died because of this vaccine. Although your mother does and should have the right to make all medical decisions for you her reason is not a valid or logical one. The vaccine is intended for girls who are NOT sexually active. If you wait until you are it’s too late. Nearly everyone who is sexually active has been exposed to HPV. Some people are just weird about sex and would rather live in denial when it comes to their kids and I believe this is probably the real problem. If she doesn’t acknowledge in any meaningful way that you will have sex someday you won’t. It doesn’t make sense it just makes her feel better.
