Why do LCD TV’s smell like toxic plastic?
Q: We have purchased 3 LCD TV’s (different brands) over the last 3 months and all of them smell like toxic plastic (2 of which have since been returned due to the smell). I noticed that there are many posts that talk about the smell being generated when the TV is turned on during the warm-up period, but this does not apply since our TV is turned off for days at a time without the smell dissipating. It’s not a ventilation issue either since it’s in a large room with a vaulted ceiling, two ceiling fans, two supply air registers and a large window. I can live with the smell that has been there for more than 2 weeks now as long as it is a non cancer causing agent creating the smell. Any help would be appreciated. We checked out the wiring in the house and there were no issues.
A: Unless you are unplugging the set (or turning off your power strip), there is still power to the power supply with the set turned off. You may have to reprogram channels, but this may help if you wish to try it.This smell should dissipate with time.Warm plastics WILL emit an odor, but the world wants thin TVs. I imagine that’s why you purchased LCD instead of a bulky less expensive tube or rear projection model. As far as cancer causing, time will only tell, but I can’t imagine this to be completely healthy and harmless over the long run.
I Need Some Advice Here?
Q: I can hear tv’s turn on and off and i can hear this high pitched sound when they stay on with no other noises in the room, what causes this, is it hearing loss? i read it could be, i also read it could be a sign of cancer, can you please advise me?
A: i doubt it’s either, because it’s not a “ringing” in your ears which would indicate damage of some sort, and doubtful it’s cancer, it’s just that you can hear that pitch of the noise being emitted. i hear the same thing from time to time, i’m sure it probably has something to do with soundwaves that the speaker’s making, or something. idk…like a dog hears a dog wistle, you hear tv’s……i know how you feel
