Can anyone tell me why I’m having heart palpitations? (detailed)?
Q: About 5 years ago I began taking Zoloft for anxiety/stress (I’m 19). Shortly thereafter I began experiencing heart palpitations very infrequently – maybe once every few months. The palpitations became more frequent last year, which I attribute to the added stress of my freshman year of college. Once summer came around, I stopped having them as much. Then came today.I have been having almost nonstop palpitations for about 9 hours now. It feels like my heart is flipping over inside my chest and then I have to cough. Other than that, I have no symptoms besides a slight headache. No shortness of breath, no nausea, no dizziness, no chest pains.I went to the ER and they did an EKG but everything came up normal. They just told me that it was probably anxiety or caffeine and sent me home.I am completely unsatisfied with their diagnosis and am scared of what might be wrong. I am very underweight despite efforts to gain and of course have a high level of anxiety. Could my palpitations be related to an overactive thyroid?Any thoughts on the subject would be greatly appreciated! I’m scared 🙁
A: Your health care is supposed to make you feel safe and secure with your health, go back to your doctor and tell him this, maybe they well have a more in-depth look.Good luck.
Relationship w/recovering alcoholic. What do I do?
Q: I have been in a relationship for a year. I met my S.O. (Significant Other) through a friend and then ran into him at work several years later. After spending a few months with him, I decided to start dating him. We had the same moral and family values, integrity, had a ton of fun (not drinking related) and seemed to mesh perfectly. He always complimented me, gave me appreciation for my value, and showered me with affection. In June of last year, he was pulled over for DUI, reported the charges to our employer and the company advised that he seek treatment in a alcohol rehabilitation center. He entered a 30 day treatment program in February of this year. Initially, he was doing very well, he was working the steps and seemed to be making progress towards his “underlying issues”. After the third week, things took a different turn. He became negative, rude, feelingless, mean, and miserable. This behavior has been ongoing ever since. I have always been a very upbeat, positive, and cheerful person. I have been told many times that I should become a motivational speaker. Under other circumstances, I would have walked away and not looked back, but I stayed and “adapted” to show support and for concern for him during this transition. 90% of the time, he is in a stressed, angry state. (Dry Drunk Syndrome???) He can’t even drive 5 miles without blowing up and someone on the road. Being in this environment has taken its toll. I didnt respond to him or ever tried to combat or complain about the negativity or the rude comments, however the constant presence in the environment has made me stressed, uptight, and feeling helpless. After time, I noticed changes in myself that werent favorable – feeling short tempered, being synical, feeling tired (because of inability to sleep), had frequent headaches and an upset stomach, and the lack of value seem to make all of my efforts meaningless. Within the last couple of weeks, we have had two “fallouts”. If I “behave inappropriately” by being silent and stepping back or if I get mad over something that HE deems inappropriate then he backs away and doesnt call me for a couple of days. He then tells me that “I remind him of his ex-wife” when I get angry. This past weekend, he snapped at me because “I was moody and told me that I had better lose the short fuse” (in a tone one would use to reprimand a child). At that point I didnt say anything and went through the rest of the day without any communication. Our children and his mother were present, so I did not feel that it was an appropriate time to discuss matters.I called later that night and the following morning and he hasnt returned my phone calls. It has now almost been a week and he still has not reached out to contact me.#1 – I read blogs by others and have determined that his behavior is “normal” for one in recovery. I feel very hurt that he refers to my behavior as that of his ex-wife and he cant rationalize the fact that his “negative world” may have had a part. I see that as his problem and not mine.#2 – How can a person logically “punish” another person for “not being able to deal with his moods, when that is the very thing that he cannot do? What could possibly be going through a person’s head (for a week) as to why there is no phone call?#3 – How long does it take for the person to get over themselves? In other words, when do they actually take responsibility for their own actions and quit blaming the rest of the world?Any info, insight, or similar experience would be graciously appreciated!
A: Just because someone is going through recovery does not mean they get a free pass to be negative, disrespectful or rude to the person that is there to support them. I can tell that you love him very much or you probably wouldn’t have put up with all of this, but how much faith do you have that this is going to get better any time soon? You are not to blame for his moods, actions etc. If he’s blaming you for these then he’s pushing his feelings about himself onto you. He is a grown man and should be taking responsibility for his own actions by now, there are no excuses for that, not even recovery. The fact that he says you remind him of his ex-wife is proof that he’s trying to hurt you. Why would you want to be with someone who insults you and says things like that??”You teach people how to treat you” – This quote is true, and unfortunately it sounds like you’ve let him get away with treating you this way for awhile, so why on earth would he change?
28 Y/O With Cardiac, Pulmonary & Other Various Symptoms-Syncope, High Blood Pressure, Difficulty Breathing?
Q: At the age of 17 I began to have palpatations and begain to have sporatic episodes of syncope and Atrial Fibrillation. I was hospitalized for AFIB and the following tests were conducted at that time: MRI, EKG’s, Stress Echo, Echo, Cardiac Cath, CT Scan, various blood work all in which were normal. Holter monitors caught some PVC’s. A tilt table was conducted and I was diagnosed with vasal vagal episodes. I was not put on any type of medications at that time. Over the years of have had minor difficulty breathing with the feeling of rapid heart beat, palpatations, dizziness, near snycopol episodes, extreme fatique, etc. I am now 28 and my symptoms have greatly increased over the last 2 years or so and in the last couple of month much much worse. I am unable to do anything with exursion without shortness of breath and the feeling of rapid heart rate, I have had a couple of syncopal episodes, severe headaches around the eyes radiating to the back of the neck, dizziness, very extreme fatique, frequent urination, anxiety, the feeling of a fever (no elevated temp), high blood pressure, feeling of palpatations, sweating to name a few. I have again undergone a stress echo, echo, ekg’s, blood work, hospitalized overnight for a CT scan of abdomen, Chest x-ray to rule out a lung embolism, or pulmonary hypertension. An EPS study (cath) was conducted and was negative. Chest xray was negative and CT scan was negative other than a small nodule (1cm) on my adrenal gland.I was released from the hospital with orders for an ultrasound of the coritid arteries and MRI of the abdomen all in which I am waiting for the scheduled date (unsure why this was not done in the hosp) I have also undergone additional blood work which was negative and a 24 hour catch to rule out Pheocromoytoma, these results are in however have yet to been read by the Endo specialist. On top of the symptoms I have mentioned above I have been having extreme dizziness (almost like vertigo) with the slightest movement. This does not come and go but is now constant, sometimes to the point I have waves of nausea.I am on the following medications: Metroprolol 50mg 1 daily, Paxil 20mg 1 daily, Ambien 10mg for sleep as needed, Pravastatin Sodium 10mg 1 daily, Diazepam 5mg every 8 hours if needed, Fish oil.My BP now seems to be mostly controlled with the beta-blocker however sometimes spikes for no reason and comes back down quickly. Prior to the medication the BP was running on average 170/90 and going up as much as 188/103.My heart has checked out ok, blood ok, lungs ok..does anyone have similar symptoms or diagnoses? Any ideas on what this may be any why the symptoms are persisting? This is getting very overwhelming and stressfull and I need to get this resolved. Many Dr’s do not seem to take this seriously because they look at my age of 28 and state someone of my age would not have any major problems.
A: As I was reading your question Phenocromocytoma popped into my head, so I’m glad that you are seeing an endocrinologist. They will probably order more blood work when you see them. I hate it when they use age to say your not sick. Hang in there an I hope you get answers soon, take care, Donna
