Can taking medications cause miscarriages?
Q: I’m not sure if I am pregnant or not but I wasn’t feeling good and so I decided to take tylenol and motrin and I wanted to know if that may cause a miscarriage? If you do know could you please provide me lots of details on what happens after getting a miscarriage from taking these pills? Thank you.
A: Causes of miscarriages are complex and they sometimes are caused by medications, but medications are not the only reason miscarriages occur. Motrin, which contains Ibuprofen should not be taken during the last 3 months of pregnancy. Tylenol is thought to be relatively safe during pregnancy. However, you should always consult your Obstetrician when taking any medications during pregnancy, even over-the-counter meds. And furthermore, some meds may be relatively safe at a certain point in the pregnancy but may be dangerous at other times during the pregnancy. This is so because the medication may have another effect (side-effect) when the fetus is at certain stages of development. Medication is classified by category (A,B,C,.. and X) X being by far the worst and X means that there is overwhelming evidence that this medication is detrimental to the fetus. There may be many reasons why you aborted and it may not be because of the meds, You will probably never know for sure, It may be that the fetus had some other problem and would have aborted anyway even if you didn’t take the meds, It is thought that pregnant women should avoid all medications unless they have a medical condition such that not taking meds for that condition will be worse on the fetus than treating the condition. The government frowns upon doing experiments (or research) on pregnant women to see what effect certain meds have upon a developping fetus. So all the evidence is anecdotal or at least not confirmed by proper studies. Doctors know from cases where pregnant women took certain meds without consulting their doctors or when the medications where necessary in saving the life of the mother that these meds have a detrimental effect upon the fetus. An example is benzodiazepines, These are known to be detrimental. Also all cancer meds are known to be teratogenic (causes miscarriages). Other meds are classified by what doctor believe are detrimental in some anecdotal cases. And again a particular med can have no effect at a certain time during the pregnancy but be bad at other times.
Could this be the cause of my miscarriage?Thank you?
Q: I didn’t know i was pregnant at the moment so i was using Differin the medicine for acne that has Accutane ingredients in it prescribed by my dermatologist. When i found out i was pregnant i stop using Differin but they say it stays in the blood for months…it’s a skin product for the face but they say it’s dangerous i guess…Another mistake i think i made was that i took too many prenatal vitamins + another iron medication that i use to take because i am anemic…I think i overdose the iron.I was 7 weeks pregnantSo what do you think?Be honestThank you so much
A: The problem is that so many things can pass through the placenta and into the foetus. Most drugs have a leaflet with them that will warn against taking them if you have certain conditions, which include pregnancy. Unfortunately vitamins and things like iron tablets frequently do not.Remember you are sharing your blood and what is safe for you may well not be to the baby. You need to discus this problem with a doctor – and for goodness sake do not take advice from here which is often ill informed, wrong and could in this case cause another miscarriage!!Trust the professionals!!!
Miscarriage Mystery…How Can It Be?
Q: My hubby asked that i share to see if anyone may have gone through what i have or may have some idea to our little mystery. So late October we found out we were pregnant with our second baby. My symptoms were very much the usual, tender areas, sickness, tired and cravings. We went to have an ultrasound done around seven weeks. We knew it was early but they went ahead and took a look. I was nervous, as most mothers are no matter how many times you’ve done it, but this time there was nothing to calm my fear. They found a sac but no baby, no heart beat, nothing. A week later again no baby or heartbeat. They gave me all the information on miscarriage and it was not a waiting game. Sure enough at nine weeks,Dec 2o, I went home from work in horribly familiar pains, cramping and small contractions. The next morning I woke up needing to use the bathroom and there it was. I did what I thought was necessary and saved the “sample”, as they call it, and called my hubby. We went in to the hospital that afternoon. Test after test I went through and after hours of waiting they confirmed the sample and the miscarriage. An hour long ultrasound session confirmed that nothing was left (their opinion since I couldn’t watch) and after more tests and a long wait a nurse who had just clocked on sent me off with a prescription they did not explain to me. For two days I took this medication which caused horrible contractions and followed their instructions to call a OBGYN they recommended to me. After one last check up and a blood test (and finding out they were to prescribe me pain killers for the medication I was on) I went home relieved it was finally over. I was heartbroken and in a state of shock from all i had to go through in just a few days. My hubby and I had a short time to relax until the bills starting pouring in. Then the stress began. I hardly had time to mourn the baby I never really had. January rolled around and we celebrated our sons birthday as well as the new year. Late January we were to go away with some friends. I wasn’t feeling very well and something inside me gave me a very familiar feeling. I asked my hubby if he thought it would be silly of me to take a pregnancy test. He said no and so the twenty second of January I took the test. Sure enough it confirmed my feeling, it was positive. I wasn’t sure if I should be excited or scared. It had been about five weeks since the miscarriage…maybe my levels were still reading high? We estimated if I got pregnant after the miscarriage I could only be a few weeks along so we waited…the longest wait of my life. Finally, at about ten weeks since the miscarriage, and what we assumed would be week seven or eight, we went in for another ultrasound. Having only one insurance at the time and loads of bills we used a local pregnancy center. Again I was a ball of nerves. Would there be a baby? Would it be too early to tell if it was there or had a heart beat? I was shaking. They did the usual protocol, starting with a tummy, and informing me they would probably have to do a pelvic. I was used to this and prepared myself for whatever popped up on the screen. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could prepare me for what I saw. She put the device to my tummy and there it was…A little face, body, arms, hands…EVERYTHING! It stared back at us like it was just waiting to be discovered. All my fears washed away, starting at my head and leaving out my toes. My hubby’s face lit up and the nurse let out a squeel of surprise. She moved around to get a look at our little surprise and it happened…the baby started moving. I grabbed my hubby’s arm and he stared mouth wide open. The nurse found it’s heart and it too was beating away. I was in too much shock to cry all though everything in me wanted to. The shock wasn’t over yet. After a good examination and measuring the computer put the numbers together and up popped the most shocking of news. Our baby read measured at ten weeks old. The development, heartbeat, size..it all measured at ten weeks. But how? It put our due date at Sep 24…but that would make the date of conception Dec 18. How is that? Well there you have it. We have plan to go back to the OBGYN we saw after the miscarriage. But for now anyone who may have any idea how such a tragedy can become such a blessing feel free to comment. As of now only God knows
A: That`s such a sad/happy story. It seems impossible and like a miracle. I hope you enjoy your babys 🙂
