Q: I am having a miscarriage and am just wondering about the causes of it. I am beginning to come to terms with the fact that this is happening to me and I am devastated. I want to know what causes miscarriage. Is something wrong with me? Did i do something wrong during the pregnancy (6 weeks along). I am so confused as to if i did something or if there is something I can do to prevent this from happening I am terrified that i cannot have children. I was before I got pregnant, and still am now that I have miscarried…
A: More than anything the cause of miscarriage is that the fetus was unviable. This means had it been born there would have been something seriously wrong with it physically or medically. Second highest cause is just bad luck, Doctors couldn’t tell you the cause because they can’t do an autopsy on such a small fetus (yet) and there is no reason why the healthy mother would not be able to carry to term. Then there is the chance there is something wrong with the mother but you would most likely know if you went to the doc if that was the case. Then there are the Accidents (car or other) Lastly the self induced. Unfortunately having one makes you more likely to have another, Luckily I have know a lot of women who have had miscarriages and even still births that have gone on to have perfectly healthy babies conceived months later.Sorry for your loss andGOOD LUCK!!

Q: I just tested positive on a HPT, that makes me 4 weeks on Sun. Any way this is my first pregnancy after depo and Im very nervous. I’ve heard so many stories about this form of Birth Control causing miscarriages and birth defects. Does anyone know anything about this and can fil me in on what exactly I should be concerned about and expect or hopefuly not and my chances are just the same as anyone else’s . Thanks.
A: They say miscarriages happen to 1 in 5 pregnancies, and usually in the first trimester. There is really nothing you can do to prevent a miscarriage. It usually is a genetic malformation and you can’t prevent that. The best things to do for your pregnancy is not to smoke, drink, do drugs, or stress too much! I know it’s hard not to stress, especially when your in your first trimester. As far as depo, I know people that have perfectly normal babies after taking it. Don’t stress too much, and just go for regular prenatal check ups!

A: The known causes of miscarriage, trauma, problem with the embryo, problem with the mom.Trauma would be physical, a car accident, fall etc.Problem with mom-incompetent cervix (cervix dilates) can be treated with a cerclage (stitches), problem with the uterus (fibroids, scar tissue), problem with the hormone levels, low progesterone produced by the ovary in the first trimester causes bleeding, treated with progesterone suppositories, infection.Problems with embryo-replication error, usually before the HR beginsAn argument could be made that stress alters hormone levels which could adversely effect the pregnancy, though this theory is the only one not covered in nursing school.
