Taking beta blockers for a job interview, need opinions please?

Q: I have a job that doesn’t pay enough so I been looking for a second job outside my field (art/graphic) due to a bad economy. I got an interview tomorrow for a job I’m not interested in; doing food service in a hospital. The day before, I get really nervous and stressed out about it and sometimes get nightmares. However my anxiety isn’t bad enough to cause me to miss the interview; I still go and follow the basic interview rules; I arrive early, eye contact, shake hands, dress nice, etc. But deep down I’m a ticking time bomb of nerves thinking about job rejection, that I’m not good enough–I hear that employers can pick up on this and that’s why alot of ppl aren’t hired. When I tell my doctor about this, she suggests me getting counseling and writes me a prescription for a beta blocker, propranolol (Inderal). She said that beta blockers can be used to reduce symptoms of performance anxiety in nervwracking situations, like interviews, public speaking, etc. I thought they were only for heart problems/high blood pressure. When I read about propranolol Inderal, I saw some serious and even fatal side effects like irregular heart beat, nausea, fainting, etc. I’m scared of how this medication will effect me. Do you all think it’s worth popping this pill just to calm my nerves for tomrrow? I wonder if it’s more trouble than it’s worth because of the side effects?

A: There are potential side effects with any medication you take. I have taken propanolol daily for years, and have yet to experience a side effect. But, obviously, some people will experience side effects, which is why we know what they are. Only you can decide this. If your doctor felt it was reasonably safe for you to use the drug, then it probably is.
