Can I donate blood if I have type 2 diabetes?
Q: Do my sugar levels affect the suitability of my blood?
A: I asked the blood bank the very same question. They told me as long as my glucose had been under control for six months I was good to go. Then I dropped the bomb on the lady. I told her I was nearly 60, took blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication, as well as meds for my neuropothy and an aspirin everyday. I expected her to tell me I was unfit. Her response was one word, “SO”. So based on my experience I would suggest you give it a try if you want to donate.
Does having diabetes, type 2 where I take pills, does that disqualify me from selling plasma?
Q: My problem is that my family is currently in dire need of money. Were behind on our power bill, so the only thing I’ve figured that I can do at this point is to sell some plasma. I’ve been applying for work, with no luck for months, but I don’t want to waist any money going to the Plasma center to find out that I don’t qualify. I live an hour and a half from the nearest center, so the cost in gas isn’t worth it if I won’t be able to donate. A second issue for me to find out about is that I’m also in pain management. I receive methadone from my doctor, and I don’t worry about any other drugs, since I don’t take any, or smoke anything, but I can’t imagine that being a diabetic who is on methadone would still be able to sell plasma. My sister is convinced that I would, since it’s just plasma, and not blood. Is this correct? No std’s of any type, good shape, just diabetes and my pain management meds.
A: Why don’t you call the plasma center? I’m sure they would know if you qualify.
Organ donations – can I donate?
Q: Again I have read of fantastic things that have been done using donated organs and I wondered if it were possible for a type 2 diabetic to donate anything? Apart from the diabetes and having had stomach ulcers which are long healed, I am reasonably fit, if not tired. I can see (with glasses), kidney and liver function are fine and have low cholesterol. I wonder if it is worth me signing up?I have no religious qualms about such things. I figure that if God was so against it, why did he make us compatible with tissue types and blood groups? I would love to be able to donate something after my death if it would help others.Doctors, transplant coodiators, please reply. How do I go about registering if I can? UK.
A: I believe you can donate your organs yes, and well done for thinking of this. You will save lifes. I have my organ doner card, I just went on the NHS website and got it on there.
