Is it possible for a contrast dye test to cause enough heart damage to cause Congestive Heart Failure?
Q: I had a series of contrast dye tests to determine why I can't carry a pregnancy to term, and my health hasn't been the same since. I started having periods lasting 3 to 7 weeks at a time and developed anemia. I was fatigued, but I thought it was the anemia. After the anemia was taken care of, I was still fatigued, but I thought may be it was depression caused by the miscarriages. So I dealt with that. Then I noticed that I actually get flu symptoms any time I over do it. If I work around the house more than usual, or take a walk on an incline, or run more errands than usual. Some times it just lasts a day or two. If I really over do, I can be sick a couple of weeks. For a while, I thought maybe it was just that my immune system was bad and I was getting sick every time I got run down. But I also noticed that the sickness is accompanied by edema. So now I'm worried that it's CHF, which runs in my family.I have 2 holes in my heart. Could the dyes have worsened them?
A: The dye will not cause CHF. I was diagnosed with something called Post/Peri-Partum Cardiomyopathy after I had my first child. PPCM is a condition where for unknown reasons the heart enlarges, usually the left side. When they did the dye, was it during an echo exam? If so, they were looking for how well the heart pumps and to what degree there is damage. Also CHF is not a disease in and of itself, it is usually caused by some other underlying cause, such as an enlarged heart (which has many causes), or damaged heart from to many heart attacks. The purpose of the dye is to see how blood is flowing because on sonograms (which is what an echo-cardiogram is) you cannot see the blood. Although anemia will cause fatigue also. But if you are worried about heart failure an x-ray can show if you have fluid around the heart. Believe me it can't be missed. I've had the contrast dye 3 times, the only thing it does for some people is raise their body temperature a little, which goes away quickly. However if you are truly worried make an appointment with a cardiologist, or go to the emergency room. to make the visit quicker say the following: I have shortness of breath, if you have edema mention that, if you've had weight gain of more than 5 lbs in 2-3 days mention that. that usually gets me to the back immediately depending on the hospital.
Can anxiety/depression cause you to lose weight?
Q: I had a baby last year, and after birth was still about 25 pounds overweight from my normal weight. This past August I had a miscarriage & decided to start eating organic, etc. I started losing weight rapidly- too rapidly I think. Since the miscarriage I have had multiple panic attacks and have suffered from horrible anxiety and depression. When I am worried I don't have an appetite. I have lost about 18 pounds in the last 3 1/2 months and am getting pretty thin. Has my stomach shrunk? I am just not as hungry anymore. I am getting worried b/c I want to try to get pregnant again and don't want to mess up my body. I am 130 lbs so I'm not extremely tiny, but just getting more thin than I would like to be. I thought at first I was losing weight so fast b/c I was eating so healthy and stopped eating sweets or anything with high fructose corn syrup, etc. Only organic. The weight melted off fast, but now I think it may have to do with my depression and anxiety too... anyone else have this?
A: Yes, depression or anxiety can cause a loss of appetite. There are people who eat more when they are depressed. But, normally, having these issues affects the Sympathetic Nervous System, which has " receptors" located in the smooth muscle of the of the "gut", and can cause decreased motility. This will decrease your appetite.. But, you have improved your eating habits which may also be a part of your weight loss. Since you are concerned about your weight loss and you are experiencing panic attacks, you should seen by your Doc. He/she can better evaluate you since they know your medical history. I hope that this helps and Good Luck.

A: Oh yes. Stress is a real apetite suppressant for some. For others it's the opposite and they eat to release endorphins which makes them feel better. If I am super stressed I can't eat a thing and will lose weight quickly.
