- Q: i am probably joining a new lab as a PhD student soon, and they have already invited me to their lab BBQ... but it has major awkwardness potential. I tend to panic in social situations with new people. I can't risk pannick attack while they're watching... not a good start to new lab. The lab-head who is hosting it seems very keen to have everyone there, so it seems whatever excuse i make he may change plans to fit me in and then it will be even more tricky to get out of it. Also it's a pretty small group, about 7, so i'd be noticed missing. To top it all off, it's at the boss's house, AND it's a pain to get to (i don't have a car and it's a fair way out of town), which also means it's near impossible to slip away from if i need to calm down for a bit. Being a small crowd too i think they'd also notice if i slipped off for a while for a bit of quiet time.I guess i could call in sick at least minute, but i really HATE lying, and that's pretty rude for catering and stuff, and there's a risk i'll get caught on that cos the science world in my town is pretty small and there's a risk someone will spot me that day looking not sick and it will get back to new lab.
