are tanning beds vitamin d different from vitamin d of the sun for deficient vitamin people?
Q: are they both the same i m in an area where i never get sun and im vitamin d deficient. i know tanning beds give vitamin d, but is there a significant difference?
A: Vitamin D is utilized by your body when you are exposed to the sun. If you were a hermit and NEVER went out into the sun you would probably develop a deficiency. I would NOT go to the tanning bed thinking it’s healthy to do so just so I can get Vitamin D. It only takes 20 minutes in the sun (not sun bathing) for your body to start using Vitamin D. Vitamin D is useless unless there is sun exposure to help your body break it down and use it. Driving to the beach and having your arm in the window is SUFFICIENT.
Does the light from tanning beds give you Vitamin D?
Q: I know that you get Vitamin D from sunlight, but what about the light from tanning beds? LOL, people, I wasn’t asking if *I* should use a tanning bed! I just wanted to know about the Vitamin D from one.Oops, meant to say I’ve never used a tanning bed. Noooo, I’m pale-skinned and I sparkle in the sunlight. ;D
A: You don’t get vitamin D from light! However vitamin D_3 is produced in skin exposed to sunlight. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D)It seems that most tanning lights give off about 5% UVB, so yes they would to some extent help in the D_3 production. However natural exposure to sunlight for short durations and with proper protection for extended light is a much better idea.
