Winter Break Nightmare

Stephanie was so excited to be going home for the holidays. It seemed as if Winter Break would never arrive. Her brother, Kyle, was supposed to pick her up at the airport, but he was running late. Stephanie had a little time to kill, so she decided to explore the shops at the airport. It was strange looking at all the souvenirs from her hometown; snow-globes, coffee cups, t-shirts, bells, the list goes on and on.

Finally, Kyle arrived and they were off to their parent’s house. The town had not changed much since the past Summer, but Stephanie could feel something different in the air. She wasn’t sure what it was, but she knew something had changed.

Once at the house, she unpacked and washed up for dinner. At dinner, they had the usual catch-up conversations about school, work, and, of course, the local gossip. Stephanie couldn’t help but ask if something major had happened while she was gone. She explained how she felt an oddness in the air during the ride home. Everyone seemed to tense up, but they said nothing new had happened. Then Kyle began talking about the new dress code at school and Stephanie just let it go.

The following night, Stephanie met some of her friends at the local coffee shop. She was excited about catching up with old friends, but was determined to find out what her family was hiding. It didn’t take long for someone to mention the hot topic of the town. It turns out that a family that recently moved into the area had been brutally attacked in their new home. The only survivor was the youngest child, a girl around seven years old. The police were still looking for the person or people that committed the crime. They had very few clues even though the scene was extremely gruesome. They did believe that a local teen was involved, although, they did not have a name. The girl was the only witness and she stated that a teenager killed her mom, dad, and brother. She didn’t see anyone else. The police wouldn’t say what injuries the girl sustained or how she survived. They also didn’t have any leads, but did have a description of a birthmark on the persons right arm. The girl stated it looked like an arrow.

Stephanie was pleased to know that her feelings that something had happened were right, but she was very disturbed by the description of the birthmark. Kyle has a birthmark just like that, but she didn’t dare say anything to her friends.

Once back home, she found it strange that everyone was still awake. They don’t normally wait up for her, so she was afraid something was wrong. As she entered the door, her father called her into the family room. They were all sitting there as if something horrible had happened. She asked what was going on and her father asked her to have a seat.

Her mother stated that she knew that Stephanie’s friends had told her about the family that had been killed, but that there was a lot more to the story than anyone else could possibly know. Although she had no idea what they could possibly know that wasn’t already in the news, she was intrigued. Her father explained that there may be some things said that she will not understand, but it will all work out in the end. Stephanie told them that she heard about the birthmark and jokingly said it must have been Kyle. When no one said anything, Stephanie became very concerned and stiffened in her seat. The looks on her parents faces said it all.

After several minutes of silence, Kyle spoke up and told her what had happened. He did not leave out a single gruesome detail. He explained that he was not himself and that he was extremely sorry for what he did, but that no one was to find out. Stephanie started to speak, but her father interrupted, telling Kyle not to worry about Stephanie telling anyone. Surprised that her parents were okay with Kyle getting away with these murders, She was unsure on how to handle the information. How could they hear all those details and be fine with it? He was sorry, sure, but people died; a little girl lost her entire family.

Stephanie was so confused and Kyle could see it on her face. He knew he could not trust her and he was not going to be caught. He knew he had to do something to keep her from telling anyone. He told their parents to go to bed and to Stephanie’s surprise, they obeyed. What was going on here? Stephanie started to ask them, but they told her goodnight and went upstairs, leaving her alone with Kyle.

Kyle took one of the dining room chairs and sat right in front of her. Stephanie was beginning to fear her brother. He looked her in the eyes and she saw something in them that she never noticed before, evil, pure evil. She was terrified.

He knew that she was scared of him, but that she would also tell. He could not let that happen. He began reminding her of all the things he had done to the family. He told her he would have killed the little girl, but she reminded him of her so he spared her life. He wanted to spare Stephanie’s life too, but she was not trustworthy. He decided that she was gone away for far too long. The only way to ensure self-protection was to get rid of his sister.

He pulled out the knife from the sheath he had hid underneath the chair. Stephanie tried to scream, but before a sound could come out, he had the knife at her throat. She closed her eyes and prayed that this was just a very bad dream. The feeling of the knife sliding across her throat let her know that it was not a dream.

He loved the way it felt having control over another person’s life. The life draining out of her as the blood flowed from her neck gave him a satisfaction that he never found before. He didn’t even feel this good when he killed that family. Kyle found his calling in life and there was no stopping him now.
