Wedding Excusions and Alarums

Stu and Kallie are college students. They have been together for two years, and had definitely decided to marry. Kallie got a new job, and in the process learned that Stu, who was an undergraduate, could be included in her insurance if they wed before August 15th. Her family lived locally, but his were out-of-state; so this meant a mad scramble and major pooling of funds to enable the groom’s family to attend.

Stu sent his mother, who is much more of a poet than financier, a plane ticket so that she could attend the event.

At first, all seemed to be going well. Stu’s mother and Kallie hit it off right away. Besides, between jet lag and wedding preparations there really wasn’t time to develop any problems. The day before the wedding, Mom elected to stay at the apartment and baby-sit the 12-year-old “puppies”. The dogs are a sweet pair of Frise Bishons, who resemble little woolly sheep. She was attempting to clean up a bit, when she knocked a peanut butter jar off the counter. The dogs dashed to try to help clean it up.

She was able to keep them from getting into it before she got the mess picked up, and placed the broken jar into the trash container in the kitchen. When the bridal couple returned, all three of them went to the park where the happy couple were hosting a barbeque — which was a great success.

When they returned to the apartment, however, the dogs had overturned the trash and ingested the glass laden peanut butter. The morning of the wedding, the couple went off to get their hair and nails done while Mom again baby sat the dogs. The little male began to pass copious amount of aluminum foil, and vomited two pieces of broken glass.

At the last moment before the wedding, poor Kallie was on the phone, calling the vet and calling a friend to take the doggies for an emergency check up. Fortunately, a friend, who had plans that kept her from attending the ceremony, was willing to take the dogs to the vet. The wedding was saved.

The ceremony was simple, but heartfelt, as the couple clowned a bit during the pre-ceremony picture taking, then teared up as they said their vows. En route to the major photo shoot in the park after the wedding, they learned that both little dogs would be fine. X-rays showed that the female hadn’t eaten any of the foreign objects, and that the little male didn’t have anything lodged in any vital areas.

The photo-shoot in the park was long and hot — even though it produced some memorable pictures of the bride and groom with family members. The wedding supper was planned at an Italian restaurant later in the evening. Kallie, Stu, some friends and family stopped off at little pub for a bit of refreshment before continuing to the next main event.

This picture catches the bride and groom listening to a story told by a friend, relaxing in the pub’s wonderful air conditioning. They’ve not quite put aside their party manners, but you can see that they are both very tired. Getting married on a shoe-string is a lot of hard work!
