The Universal Gap Between Responsibility and Playtime

Caught between childhood constraints and a bottomless adulthood
Where the ground is invisible and the bridge non-existent
Thinking about whether to make the jump or wait for the new bridge
To be built on even shakier ground than it was 10 years ago
Deciding whether the future is bright enough to wear sunscreen
Or risk the exposure to the cancerous death rays from the sun
Old enough to know better and too young to care about 401(k)s
Retirement age is in another galaxy far away from any possible realm
Focused on the issues happening today instead of tomorrow
No separation between church, state and bloodsucking creditors
That would make Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer seem benign
In comparison to the fact that reality is a hard slap in the face
The equivalent to a knock out from Muhammad Ali or Joe Frazier
Obscene credit card bills and mortgage payments punch away everything
No going to The Cave or any type of night club on Friday nights
Left in an electric free and candle operated living room
Wondering why the electric bill wasn’t paid before the trip to Jamaica
Learning very quickly that life is almost like balancing a checkbook
There are days everything is in order to the last penny
Others have overdraft fees galore that make vacations a pipe dream
Just have to pick your financial and personal battles wisely
Sacrifice the frivolous for the ones that keep a roof over your head
And not a cardboard box instead
Don’t want to be a victim of bad financial planning anytime soon
Would rather be a boring adult than a careless child acting grown up
That’s a lesson worth taking to the bank.
