The Five Pillars of Islam

Muslims believe there is only one true God. They also believe that the Holy Qur’an was the original word of God and that Christians and Jews have added their own ideas to it. They do not believe in Jesus or that he died on the cross for our sins. They believe that angels exist and go around doing God’s work. They also believe that when Judgment day comes every soul will be alive once again. Then you will have to confess to God not just the bad but the good things you did in your life.

The first of the five pillars of Islam is Shahadah. Shahadah says that if you want to be a Muslim you must state in your prayers that there is only one God. The second Pillar is Salat and it means prayer. Muslims must pray 5 times a day and before they pray they must wash up. When they pray they position there body facing the Ka’bah in Mecca. Muslims can pray anywhere they want as long as they do 5 times a day.

The Next is Zakat which is all about helping others. They believe that giving to charity makes their things pure. Even making someone happy is considered to be charity. The 4th Pillar of Islam is Sawm. Swam is during Ramadan when they fast for 1 month. During the sunlight hours they cannot eat or drink. Some Muslims believe they cannot ever swallow their own saliva.

The last Pillar of Islam is Hajj. Hajj is a trip that Muslims must take at least once in their life. The trip is taken in the last month of their calendar. During that time they all come together and pray at the holiest city in Islam.

I think the pillar that would be the easiest to achieve would be the 3rd Pillar. I really enjoy helping others when I can and I donate to charity already. I also like to make people smile and laugh.

The hardest Pillar to fulfill would be the 4th. Don’t like going without a meal not to mention it would be hard to go through a day of work like that. When I was in Kuwait we had to follow that law when we were off the camp. I went about 6 hours without food or water and it was about 120 deg. The Muslims that worked at the camp helping us had no problem not eating or drinking all day.
