The Common Sense Jobs Agenda

Several overly distressing issues are currently on the minds of many Americans and include: unemployment, job insecurity, and the stagnant economy. Unfortunately, normal every day citizens lack available options when it comes to having their voices heard, however, seven U.S. mayors decided to forgo sitting idle and opted to take on Washington with a “Common Sense jobs agenda.”

The seven mayors met with congressional leaders and White House officials on Tuesday to discuss a jobs plan they’re proposing independently of President Obama’s Job’s Bill. The independent proposal includes a “comprehensive, fully-funded” transportation bill. Their plan is sponsored by the US Conference of Mayors.

The agenda outlines what these mayors believe to be practical options designed to create millions of new jobs by immediately investing in infrastructure, small businesses, manufacturing, trade, and tourism. A more in depth view of the proposal includes:

Closing corporate loopholes which will result in a fair tax code. Cuts in military spending, and a reallocation of funds to domestic priorities. Establishing equitable tax rates that will ensure that we can adequately invest in our national priorities.

By and large, many Americans have very little interest in what is taking place behind the scenes in Washington; however, many agree that a quick policy shift is desperately needed — before more jobs are discarded, and before more people become unemployed. Several ominous signs on the “road to recovery” loom in the background. Recent poverty statistics point out the obvious, that the majority of U.S. citizens are generating less income than they did in previous years, the unemployment rate hasn’t experienced any noticeable change in quite some time, and there doesn’t appear to be a plethora of available jobs, and for the long term unemployed — that dismal fact alone has made their job search seem almost futile.

Locally, the August unemployment rate won’t be released for the Charlotte region until September 26th. However, across the county line, York County’s unemployment rate rose to 13.3 percent. Therefore, the Charlotte region is likely to see a relative increase in unemployment as well.

Across the country, citizens are eager to entertain solutions that will truly create jobs, strengthen the economy, and restore job security. Hopefully President Obama, the US Conference of Mayors, and Congress are ready to compromise and set forth a plan that will succeed in putting American’s back to work.
